HELENA, Mont. -- The Eastern Oregon University football team upset No. 1 Carroll College on the road Saturday, 41-33. It ends a 44-game Frontier Conference win streak for the Saints.

Carroll entered the season as the preseason conference favorite after winning 11 consecutive conference titles. It also ended the defending national champion's 15-game win streak, which was the longest in the NAIA. It marks the first time Eastern beat a No. 1 ranked NAIA team in any sport.

The Saints took advantage of an early Mountaineer turnover and went 49 yards for the opening score with 11:24 left in the first quarter. Dane Broadhead connected with Lat Wipplinger on a 15-yard touchdown pass. Eastern fumbled on the ensuing kickoff and the Saints took advantage of another short drive with a touchdown. Broadhead found Chance Demarais for another 15-yard strike.

Eastern Oregon got it's first score with 49 seconds left in the first quarter when Ware ran in a five-yard scramble to cut the lead to 14-7. Ware's touchdown run ties the school career record for rushing touchdowns. It is his 13th school record.

Carroll went 70 yards for it's next touchdown at the 11:36 mark of the second quarter. Broadhead found Matt Ritter on a 25-yard connection to give the Saints a 21-7 lead.

The Mountaineers responded with 21 straight points. A Jake Burroughs to Dillon Bedford five-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds remaining until halftime ended an 80-yard drive. Ware found Abraham Naway for a four-yard pass, nine minutes into the second half for the tying score. It was another 80-yard drive for EOU.

A combined 33-point fourth quarter began with a Ware to Justin Udy 10-yard touchdown pass. It completed a 15-play, 96-yard drive that lasted 7:45 with 10:50 left in the fourth quarter. Demarais capped off a 65-yard drive with a one-yard score at the 5:45 mark. Carroll missed the extra point after the touchdown.

A Ware to Naway 12-yard connection with 2:41 left in regulation ended a 73-yard drive, and gave Eastern a 35-27 advantage. The Saints responded with a touchdown with 55 seconds left when Broadhead passed for a 23-yard score to Ritter. Eastern recovered an onside kick attempt and began to run the clock out.

Carroll (1-1, 1-1) used two timeouts and forced a fourth-and-two on it's own 35-yard line with 13 seconds left. Ware would scramble and find Naway for the final touchdown. The extra point missed. The Saints final chance was ended by a Karsen Garcia interception.

Broadhead finished with 198 passing yards, completing 17 of his 24 passes. He threw four touchdown passes and one interception. The reigning conference offensive player of the week, Demarais ran for 134 yards, scoring once. Ritter had a game-high 105 yards receiving.
