LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women's soccer team dropped its regular season opener to Whitman College Saturday, 5-1.
Mauriana Gonzalez opened the scoring in the game and gave the Mountaineers (0-1) an early lead. The freshman chipped in a shot over Lauren Brougham in the 11th minute of play. EOU outshot the Missionaries 12-4 in the first half.
Whitman responded to Gonzalez's goal three minutes later with a Kelsey Roehner unassisted shot that found the back of the Eastern net. The Missionaries scored again three minutes before halftime when Marisol Fonzeca scored an unassisted goal.
Both teams had 10 shots in the second half and the Whitman 2-1 lead remained until the 87th minute. The Missionaries managed to find the net three times in the final three minutes of play. Julianne Masser scored the first of her two goals at the 86:02 mark. Roehner found Marisa Poorboy 20 seconds later for the fourth goal. Masser scored the final goal after a Poorboy assist in the 89th minute.
Brougham made six saves for Whitman and
Kailey Moss made five for EOU. Gonzalez and
Lauren Robideau took six shots for Eastern, and Poorboy led the Missionaries with four shot attempts. Masser and Poorboy had three shots on goal. Whitman had 10 shots on goal, compared to the Mountaineers seven.
Eastern Oregon travels to Northwest Nazarene Wednesday for a 4 p.m. MT start. The Crusaders beat Great Falls 6-2 Saturday.
