CALDWELL, Idaho -- The Eastern Oregon University soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Westminster College Saturday.
The Griffins (5-4-1) scored all of their goals in the second half after a scoreless first half. Sarah Swenson put the Griffins ahead 1-0 when she finished a cross from Brianna Wilson. It would be the second game winning goal of the season for Swenson and the sixth of her career. The score would move to 2-0 when Wilson scored her first career goal on an assist from Nicole Taylor. Jessica Harris would tally her first career goal when she finished a pass from Heather Hillam late in the second half.
“We went into the half down 0-0, and we talked about how we were still in a great position and we probably had better looks than they did,” EOU head coach Keith Scarlett said. “Our consistency does plague us at times. It's about training and transferring that to the game. You should play the way you train and today was the first-time all-season we have done so.
“You have to keep working and doing those little things that become apart of our heartbeat and breath. This is a marathon for us and not a sprint. We took a tremendous step forward today, regardless of the score-board. If we're going to continue going in that positive direction, this is the right time to do so, with conference play right around the corner.”
Eastern (0-3-1) was outshot 19 to 11, and Westminster had a 13 to eight shots on goal advantage as well. Lindsay Bekken made six saves for the Griffins, and
Chantal Schefers had 10 saves. One of the EOU shots hit the cross-bar and another one was saved off the line by a WC defender.
"We played tough, with control, and made a lot of progress as a team," Eastern's
Sarah Hiden said. "Now we just have to keep moving forward and progressing."
The Mountaineers host No. 2 Concordia University Friday in La Grande. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start and live stats will be available on EOUSports.com.
