Carroll Leaves La Grande With Win

LA GRANDE, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University football team fell to No. 3 Carroll College Saturday, 49-12.

The Saints (2-0) (2-0) gained 486 yards of offense and held EOU to 266 total offensive yards. The Mountaineers led 12-0 to begin the game, trailed to 14-12 at halftime, but was outscored 35-0 in the second half.

Carroll's Dane Broadhead threw for 180 yards and completed 17 of his 24 passes. He had three touchdown passes and one interception. Bubba Bartlett caught five passes for 55 yards, and had a touchdown reception. Matt Ritter and Chance Demarais also caught touchdown passes. Demarais gained 95 yards on the ground on 19 carries, but John Camino led the Saints with 117 yards on 19 touches and three touchdown carries.

Chris Ware led Eastern Oregon (0-3) (0-2) with 204 yards passing and was 23 for 37 with three interceptions. Jake Burroughs had 59 yards receiving and Kevin Sampson had 40 yards rushing. Three Mountaineers had over 10 ten tackles in the game, Marc-Avery Airhart had a game-high 15 tackles, Howard McDonald had 14, and Mitchel Larson had 12.

Eastern's Karsen Garcia started the scoring with a 50-yard interception return three minutes into the game. Four minutes later it was EOU's Jared Young picking up a Carroll fumble and racing 69 yards for the score.

Camino got Carroll on the scoreboard with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter with a six-yard touchdown run. The Saints went ahead for the first time in the game when Ritter caught a 14-yard pass from Broadhead with 6:15 left in the first half.

The Saints then scored twice in a three-minute span in the third quarter when Demarais was on the receiving end of a 33-yard pass and Camino broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run. A Bartlett touchdown reception and a pair of touchdown runs ended the scoring in the game.

The Mountaineers return to the field next Saturday when they host Montana State-Northern (1-1) (1-1). The Lights fell at home to Montana Tech Saturday, 17-13. The EOU and MSUN kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in La Grande.
