Athletic Staff Shares Best and Worst Summer Vacations

The sixth of July was officially the halfway point of the Mountaineer Athletic offseason. We're just 15 days past the midway juncture of summer here on the EOU campus.

The downtime for Eastern Athletics is an 84-day span between the final Saturday at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships on May 29 and a pair of exhibitions to open the volleyball and soccer seasons on Aug. 21.

Some of the EOU athletic staff has once again shared their favorite memories of summer. In this installment the staff is sharing their favorite and least favorite summer vacations.

Keith Scarlett – Soccer Head Coach

Best Summer Vacation: First trip we took as a family when my kids were old enough to really know what was going on. We didn't have much money, so we basically just chose somewhere to go and went on the road ... stopping anywhere and everywhere we chose. No rhyme or reason to it.

Worst Summer Vacation: This year ... because it was spent moving across the nation for over three days in a U-Haul truck. Nebraska and Wyoming are absolutely boring states.

Anji Weissenfluh – Women's Basketball Head Coach

Best Summer Vacation: It happened just a few years ago. I was lucky enough to spend a week in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. followed by a weeklong Caribbean cruise. Ft. Lauderdale was wonderful and I stayed right on the beach. I also got to take some time to explore Miami and South Beach —those places live up to their expectations. After a week of relaxing in the sun I boarded the Royal Caribbean ship, The Freedom of the Seas.

It was only the eighth voyage the ship had taken. The ship was truly amazing and can only be described as a floating city. Visiting our ports of call I saw some of the most beautiful places in the world and got to take part in some exciting activities. I swam with dolphins in Cozumel, Mexico; soared high above the Jamaican jungle on a canopy tour; explored the sandy beaches of Grand Cayman, and swam in the warm waters of Haiti. These were two weeks in total paradise and I will never forget those adventures.

Hailey Pearce – Volleyball Head Coach

Best Summer Vacation: Maui with my best friend, Chelsea and my sister, Heather. I had a lot of fun swimming and eating. Tried surfing, but wasn't any good at it.

Worst Summer Vacation- Disneyland when I was five. Broke my nose in the motor home on the way there, was too small to go on all the big rides and was surprisingly attracted to Dracula.

As for myself, my best summer vacation is tough to say. I was fortunate enough to take many with my family when I was young all around the country. I lived in Florida, so warm weather and the beach was there already. I think next summer with a honeymoon in the works maybe the best.

My least favorite was before my senior year at EOU. I had my second knee surgery early in the summer in Florida and could not put weight on my leg all summer. A heavy wrap around your leg at the beach is, one not attractive, and two not cool for tanning.
