Top Moments of 2009-10 #7: Garcilazo Named Athlete of the Year

MARION, Ind. – Eastern Oregon University track and field athlete, Alma Garcilazo, completed an amazing year with a fourth place finish in the women's 800 meters at the NAIA National Outdoor Championships on May 29, 2010.

Garcilazo ran a school record, 2:11.00, breaking her own old record of 2:12.01. The sophomore has broken her own school record by almost four and a half seconds during the season. Garcilazo ran the fastest split in EOU history three times this season, including the most recent in Indiana.

The Umatilla, Ore. native entered the national meet as the fifth seed. She ran a 2:15.00 in the preliminaries, a 2:12.14 in the semifinal, and the record-breaking 2:11.00 in the final. Entering the season the EOU record was 2:15.60.

On March 6, Garcilazo ran in the women's 800 meters at the NAIA Indoor National Championships in Johnson City, Tenn., and the sophomore ran to a fourth place with a time of 2:15.87. It was the first of two All-American finishes of the year.

On June 8, Garcilazo was awarded for her efforts at the outdoor championships being named the Cascade Collegiate Conference women's track and field athlete of the year.

She earned automatic qualification to the NAIA outdoor meet in three individual events (400, 800, 1,500) and as part of the 4x400 relay. At the NAIA indoor meet, she qualified in both the 600 and 800 meters and participated on EOU's 4x400 relay team which registered an eighth-place finish.

Garcilazo was the CCC champion in the 800 meters and runner-up in the 400. She also ran a leg on EOU's 4x400 relay team, which placed second at the conference meet. She was also named conference athlete of the week twice during the outdoor season.
