Mountaineers Head to Willamette Valley

Eastern Oregon makes final road trip of the regular season this weekend

The Eastern Oregon University women's and men's basketball teams make their final road trip of the regular season this weekend.

The Mountaineers travel to Salem and Eugene to face Corban College and Northwest Christian. Friday, the EOU women face a Corban (11-16) (6-9) squad who is battling for a fifth-place playoff spot. The Warriors have won three of their last four games, while Eastern has lost three of its last five. Both teams have four games left on their schedules.

The Corban men are coming off its biggest victory of the season at No. 7 Warner Pacific. The win snapped a 16-game losing streak. The Warriors (7-19) (2-13) are led by sharp-shooting guard, Ben Potloff, who is averaging 17.6 points per game. Eastern defeated Corban in La Grande on Jan. 16, 78-71. EOU, No. 22 at the time, had to hold off a feisty Warrior squad that was led by Nash Keene's game-high 18 points.

Saturday, Eastern Oregon will drive south on I-5 to Eugene to face Northwest Christian. The Beacon women (8-16 (2-13) sit at the bottom of the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings and could be eliminated from postseason play after Friday evening. NCU has lost six straight, and 13 of its last 14. But, it's one victory during that stretch came at No. 16 College of Idaho on Jan. 16. The night before the Mountaineers defeated Northwest Christian, 80-47, behind a school-record 15 three-pointers.

The Northwest Christian men are the hottest team in the conference entering the weekend. The Beacons (12-15) (8-7) have the conference's longest winning streak at five games, No. 13 Eastern has won four straight. NCU is led by University of Oregon transfer, Ben Voogd. The senior averages 17.3 points per game, and led Northwest Christian in upsets over No. 3 Oregon Tech two weeks ago, and No. 7 Warner Pacific last week.
