LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University football team welcomes the University of Montana Western to Community Stadium Saturday.
The Bulldogs and Mountaineers meet for the 16th time this weekend. EOU has played Western more than any other Frontier Conference opponent. Eastern holds an 11-4 advantage over UMW, and has won four straight over the Bulldogs.
The last time Western beat EOU was on Sept. 20, 2008, in Dillon, Mont. The Mountaineers last lost in La Grande to the Bulldogs in the 2002 season opener, 24-21. The 580-mile trip to Community Stadium is the longest road trip for Montana Western this season.
Montana Western (0-9) (0-8) comes into the gme after a 42-3 loss at Carroll last week. The Bulldogs were held to 140 total yards including minus three yards rushing. Carroll sacked Western quarterback Jeff Logan five times for losses of 46 yards and kept him to 17 of 31 passing for 143. Running back Charlie Dotson led the squad with 41 yards rushing on 10 attempts. The Saints, meanwhile, rolled to 444 total offensive yards
The most recent meeting in La Grande was on Eastern's homecoming last season, Oct. 17, 2009, the Mountaineers held off a phenomenal second half rally from the Bulldogs. Eastern jumped out to a 40-10 lead early in the second half, before UMW went on a 20-0 run over the final 24 minutes of the game. EOU won 40-30 behind 10 broken school records in the game.
Ware broke four records himself, he threw his 46th touchdown pass, and also broke Greg Stevens 18-year-old record of passing yards in a season. Ware had thrown for 2,560 yards at that point of the season. He broke his own record for total offensive yards in a season he set in 2008. Ware finished the day throwing for 279 yards, completing 19 of his 31 attempts. He had one interception and four touchdowns, three passing and one rushing.
EOU gained 143 yards on the ground, while Montana Western had 103. UMW's Micah Mamiya threw for 321 yards, completing 36 of his 65 passes. He finished with a touchdown and a pair of interceptions. Craig Cornelius caught 13 catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. Charlie Dotson led the Bulldogs on the ground with eight carries for 56 yards and two touchdowns.
In the last meeting on Sept. 25, Eastern defeated the University of Montana Western, 29-13, behind 231 all-purpose yards from
Kevin Sampson.
The junior running back carried the ball 27 times for 137 yards, and ran for a score. He also caught a team-high eight passes for 94 yards. Sampson made a pivotal play on special teams when he had a timely blocked punt late in the third quarter go out of the Western endzone for a safety. He was awarded the Frontier Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts.
Ware threw for 214 yards and completed 21 of his 37 pass attempts, but the Mountaineers racked up a season high 266 yards rushing, and finished the game with 474 yards of offense. Eastern came into the contest with a Frontier Conference high average of 155 yards on the ground per game, and the Bulldogs average a league low, 76 rushing yards per game. The EOU defense held Montana Western to 39 yards rushing.
UMW's Jeff Logan was 21 for 28 passing for 219 yards through the air. The sophomore threw two touchdown passes and no interceptions. Colton Woods led the Bulldogs with 11 catches for 119 yards.
The Mountaineers have a chance to break a few more school records Saturday. Sampson can break the school's five-year single season rushing record with 139 yards on the ground. The Seattle native is currently sixth on the All-Time EOU rushing list. He needs 49 yards to move to fourth on the All-Time list and 192 to move to third.
Seath Kimball is a forced fumble away from breaking his eighth school record. He currently leads the NAIA is sacks and tackles for loss.
Kirk Miller is a touchdown reception away from his third school record. The senior, is second all-time on the EOU career receiving yards list with 1,832 career receiving yards.
