Bulldogs Hold Off Mountaineer Rally

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University women fell to the University of Montana Western, 77-72, in the second game of the Aramark Holiday Classic Friday.

The Mountaineers (3-1) fell for the first time this season. EOU nearly made an incredible comeback to pull of the victory. Western led by as many as 10 points in the first half and eight at halftime, 40-32.

The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 16-2 run to spread the lead to a 22-point margin. UMW had its largest lead, 64-41, after a Brook Zeiler free throw at the 9:39 mark in the second half.

Eastern then went on a run of its own, 28-7, over the next eight minutes. The Mountaineers cut the lead to 71-69 with 1:14 left in regulation after a Kyle Miller shot inside the paint. However, Western was able to hold off EOU over the final minute.

Chloe Mosey scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Bulldogs. She was 8 for 12 from the field, and finished with 15 rebounds. Laura Geis also had 15 rebounds for UMW. Roxanne Thurman added a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Montana Western outrebounded Eastern, 57-46. UMW committed 17 turnovers and the Mountaineers had 11. The Bulldogs finished with 19 assists and EOU had 16.

Kelsea Hurliman recorded a double-double for Eastern Oregon with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Shaylee Nielsen added 13 points and Kyle Miller had 11 points.

The Mountaineers shot 33 percent from the field, 40 percent from behind the perimeter, and 60 percent from the free-throw line. UMW was 39 percent from the field, 25 percent from three-point range, and 60 percent from the free-throw line.

Eastern Oregon hosts Walla Walla University in the final game of the Holiday Classic Saturday at 6 p.m. Montana Western will play The College of Idaho at 4 p.m. Saturday in Game 3 of the tournament. C of I beat Walla Walla, 92-22, in the first game Friday.
