Rocky Tops Eastern on Senior Day

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University football team ended its 2010 season with a 34-28 loss to Rocky Mountain College Saturday.

The Mountaineers (5-6) (5-5) end the season with the loss. The game featured a pair of teams that were tied for second place in the Frontier Conference. With the loss, EOU moves to a tie for third place with Montana Tech. Rocky Mountain finishes with sole possession of second place.

In the lowest scoring output in the series between the two teams since RMC's 37-21 win in Billings, Mont., on Nov. 11, 2008. The teams combined for 475 points and 5,578 yards in the last five meetings.

The Battlin' Bears (6-5) (6-4) jumped out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter, and led 27-0 at halftime. The Mountaineers rallied to close the gap to 27-14 late in the third quarter, but failed to complete the rally after surrendering another Rocky Mountain touchdown.

The Mountaineers gained 558 yards of offense behind 174 rushing yards from Kevin Sampson. The junior broke a single season school record for rushing yards. He also claimed the EOU record for rushing attempts in a season. The Seattle native carried the ball 27 times Saturday. He had 213 all-purpose yards in the game.

Chris Ware threw for 283 yards and made 25 of his 45 passes. The junior threw two touchdowns and three interceptions. He also ran for two scores. Kirk Miller finished his EOU career with a game-high nine catches for 80 yards and a touchdown. The senior broke the Eastern single season record for touchdown receptions. Jake Burroughs had his first touchdown reception of the season and made eight catches for 98 yards.

Mark Desin led all receivers with 108 yards on six catches for RMC. Kasey Peters threw for 276 yards and completed 19 of his 29 passes in his final collegiate game. The Huntington Beach, Calif. native threw two touchdown passes and no interceptions. Michael Thomas ran for 101 yards on 17 carries.

Trenton Thelen and Steffan Blume each had 13 tackles for the Bears. Eric Buer had a pair of interceptions, Mike Willis and Sean Coleman each had fumble recoveries. Howard McDonald led Eastern with 15 tackles.
