Game Notes and Game Preview: Montana State-Northern

HAVRE, Mont. – The Eastern Oregon University football team will play for its second win all-time at Montana State-Northern Saturday.

The Mountaineers (4-4) (4-3) won for the first time in five tries last season in Havre. Eastern leads the all-time series 7-5, but has won four straight meetings with the Lights. MSUN last defeated Eastern Oregon on Sept. 13, 2008. Montana State-Northern has won only once in their six trips to La Grande.

In the last meeting between the teams, EOU won a 50-46 offensive battle in La Grande on Sept. 18. The 96 points in the earlier this season meeting was the most scored in a single game in the series. Eastern's 50 points in that win was the highest point total in the series by either team. The Mountaineers have averaged scoring 43 points in the last four games with MSU-Northern.

EOU picked up its first win of the season behind 15 fourth quarter points, while holding Northern scoreless in the final period. Eastern totaled a season-high 442 yards of offense. The Lights gained 378 yards, with 236 coming through the air.

Eastern's Chris Ware threw for 236 yards, and completed 20 of his 33 pass attempts. The junior threw four touchdown passes and two interceptions. Kevin Sampson gained 154 yards on the ground and crossed the goal line once. Justin Udy caught four passes for 69 yards, and Gary Cole had five catches for 60 yards.

Northern's Derek Lear finished with 224 yards passing and completed 15 of his 24 attempts. The freshman threw three touchdown passes and was intercepted once. Stephen Silva finished with a team-high 76 yards on the ground, and Stuart caught five passes for 98 yards.

Marc-Avery Airhart and Howard McDonald each had 11 tackles to lead EOU, while K.C. Barrett had 11 for Northern. Casey Varner and Seth Wildung each had an interception for the Lights. The Mountaineers' Max Hannah had an interception and Nick Roberson recovered a fumble.

The last time the Lights (3-4) (3-4) and EOU met in Havre was on Halloween of last year, and Eastern rebounded from a scary start to beat Northern, 37-20. MSUN jumped out to a 20-0 second quarter lead before Eastern Oregon reeled off 37 unanswered points.

The victory also marked only the third time the then No. 23 Mountaineers won seven games in a season in the program's 80-year history. The last time Eastern won seven games was 29 years ago, when the Mountaineers set a school record with eight wins. It was the final victory of the season last year for EOU.

Eastern recovered two fumbles and intercepted four MSUN passes in the win. Eastern Oregon finished with 449 yards of total offense, 164 yards rushing and 285 passing. Ware was 14 for 35 for 248 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Kevin Sampson can become the fourth player in school history to run for 1,000 yards in a single season with 20 yards Saturday. He ran for 154 yards on 24 carries in the first meeting with Northern this year. The junior has amassed 980 yards on the ground this season. The Seattle native is currently seventh on the All-Time EOU rushing list. He needs 244 yards to break the single season rushing record at Eastern as well.

The Mountaineers have a great chance to shatter the school record for rushing yards in a season. EOU currently sits at 1,548 yards on the ground. With three more games left in the regular season, Eastern needs 531 more rushing yards to break the 2001 team's mark of 2,079. EOU needs 177 yards a game the rest of the season to beat the record; it's averaging 193 per game so far in 2010.

Blue Pony Stadium in Havre is only 35 miles from the Canadian border. The 730-mile trip is the longest for the Mountaineers during the season. It is roughly a 15-hour bus trip. EOU will leave in the middle of the night Thursday and stop to practice in Missoula, Mont. at the University of Montana. In a role reversal for this time of year, Havre is expected to have 60-degree sunny weather at kickoff, while La Grande will have temperatures in the high 40's with rain.

Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. Mountain Time. The rest of the Mountaineers' schedule has noon start times. Saturday's game will have a pregame show beginning at 10:45 a.m. Pacific Time on KCMB 104.7 FM. The radio feed will be the Lights' broadcast. There will also be a live video stream of the game on EOUSports.com.
