Mountaineers Can't Overcome Soaring Eagles

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team was swept by Northwest University Friday, 3-0.

The Eagles (14-6) (9-4) won their fifth match in a row with the sweep. The victory was also the fourth straight shutout for NU. The streak began with a five-set thrilling win over Eastern Oregon in Kirkland, Wash. on Oct. 2.

Lauryn Ernster recorded a match-high 28 assists to lead Northwest. The sophomore added nine digs. Heather Shulke had a match-high 21 digs and Lauren Holtz had 11. Breanna Covey had a team-high nine kills.

Emily Sampson had team highs of 14 assists and 10 digs to lead the Mountaineers (11-9) (7-7). Taylor Stewart had nine kills for EOU.

Eastern began the match with a 4-0 lead to start Game 1, but then went on a back-and-forth battle with the Eagles. The teams tied for times in the first game. NU had a 19-15 lead, until the Mountaineers evened the score at 20. Northwest finished the set on a 5-1 run to win the opening game, 25-21.

The Eagles opened the second set on an 11-3 run, but Eastern closed the gap to 14-11. Northwest responded with an 8-0 run and finished the game with the win, 25-13. The third game featured five ties early in the set, until NU began to slowly pull away. The Eagles turned a close gap, into a 22-16 lead and then a 25-18 Game 3 win.

The Mountaineers host The Evergreen State College Saturday at 7 p.m. The Geoducks (4-13) (3-10) fell at The College of Idaho Friday in three sets. C of I (17-4) (13-1) has now won 12 straight matches, and will face Northwest in Caldwell, Idaho Saturday at 7 p.m. MT.
