The Mountaineers (4-3) (4-2) can set many records in Helena Saturday. Eastern is already riding the best winning streak in 20 years, but can extend that streak to five games with a victory. Standing in the way is No. 2 Carroll College. The Saints are riding a streak of their own – 39 consecutive Frontier Conference victories.
Carroll last lost to a conference opponent on Oct. 28, 2006, to Montana State-Northern, 10-3. But, the Saints were challenged last weekend at Rocky Mountain College. Carroll jumped out to a 21-7 lead, but saw the lead cut to five in the second half, before holding off a Battlin' Bear rally to win, 32-27.
The last time EOU rode a four-game winning streak, it met Carroll in Helena in a National Game of the Week. Last season on Oct. 3, the Mountaineers were No. 19 in NAIA and met a then-ranked second Fighting Saints squad. Carroll and Eastern went back-and-forth in the first half with both sides having the lead during the first two quarters. The Saints then spread the margin in the second half before winning, 37-17.
Carroll racked up 570 yards of total offense in the game, with 328 of those yards coming on the ground. John Camino amassed 189 rushing yards in the victory. Eastern Oregon finished with 101 yards rushing on 23 carries.
The Mountaineers won the first six meetings with Carroll, but the Saints have won 13 straight games in the series that dates back to 1952. The last time EOU won in Helena was in 1998, when the Mountaineers won 26-7. Eastern last knocked off Carroll in 1999 in La Grande, 28-21.
The last meeting between the two programs came in La Grande on Sept. 11 this year. The Fighting Saints surrendered the first 12 points of the game off of a pair of turnovers on their first two possessions. Carroll closed the game on a 49-0 run and held EOU to a season-low 62 yards on the ground.
Eastern can break four records Saturday at Carroll (6-0) (6-0).
Chris Ware has a chance to earn his 11th and 12th school records against the Saints. If the junior quarterback throws eight completions or throws for 205 yards, he will have more records. Those potential numbers would be new EOU career records in pass completions and passing yards. Ware threw for 204 yards in the Sept. 11 game against Carroll.
Kedrick Starr needs 11 kickoff return yards to break a single season record for kickoff return yards in a season.
Seath Kimball is one forced fumble to owning the school's forced fumbles in a career number outright.
Kevin Sampson can become the first player in Eastern history to run for 100 yards in five straight games Saturday. The junior already is the first player in school history to rush for 100 or more yards four games in a row. He can also match Tyronne Gross' 2005 mark of six games over 100 yards if he rushes for 100 yards against Carroll.
Sampson can become the 4th player in Eastern to run for 1,000 yards in a season if he rushes for 69 yards Saturday. Carroll held Sampson to a season-low 40 yards in the earlier meeting this year. Sampson has run for 69 yards on 17 carries in his career vs. the Saints, an average of 4.05 yards per carry. He is currently seventh on the all-time career EOU rushing list.
The top two offenses in the Frontier Conference meet Saturday. Carroll is averaging 39.8 points and 403 yards per game, while EOU comes in averaging 32.6 points and 419 yards per outing. Both programs have excellent rushing offenses, as both are at the top of the league, Carroll averaging 193.8 yards on the ground per game, and Eastern Oregon is at an average of 193.4. The Saints are only giving up 89.5 yards per game on the ground, while the Mountaineers' opponents average 158.4 rushing yards per contest.
