Southern Slips Out of La Grande with Win

The Mountaineer volleyball falls short of upset bid

LA GRANDE, Ore. –The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team fell to #21 Southern Oregon, 3-1, Friday night.

The Mountaineers jumped out and won the first game, 26-24. But then fell in Game 2, 25-23 and Game 3, 25-23. The Raiders held off EOU in the fourth game, 25-20.

“That was a really tough loss,” Eastern head coach Kaki Morehead said. “Southern Oregon is a very talented team. I thought at times we played very well. I would have liked a little more consistency from our ladies tonight.”

Eastern Oregon challenged the Raiders in every game taking the lead in each game. Both teams had 56 kills and 55 assists in the match. Southern had a hitting percentage of .317 and the Mountaineers were at 25 percent.

Jessica Lea led the Mountaineers with 13 kills and 23 assists. The sophomore had a hitting percentage of 32. Southern Oregon's Leah Bergstrom had 16 kills and a hitting percentage 43.

Eastern Oregon returns to action Saturday night against Oregon Tech at 7 in Quinn Coliseum. The Hustlin Owls fell at The College of Idaho tonight, 3-0.
