EOU Women Soar Past Owls

Eastern uses big run to ease past Oregon Tech

LA GRANDE, Ore. -- The Eastern Oregon University women had little trouble with the Oregon Institute of Technology Saturday, 70-47.

The Mountaineers (8-5) (3-1) held the Hustlin' Owls to 27 percent shooting from the field and 4 percent from behind the perimeter. Tech made only one of its 22 three-point attempts.

Salena Leavitt and Ashlee Michelson each scored 14 points to lead Eastern. Leavitt was 6 for 9 from the field, and Michelson finished 5 for 10. Alyssa Garro added 13 points for EOU.

The Mountaineers stretched a close game open hitting seven of its 11 three-point attempts in the first half. EOU finished 10 for 21 from behind the arc.

OIT (8-8) (1-3) jumped out to an early lead and its largest advantage at the 13:10 mark, 13-4. Eastern responded with a 12-2 run to take the lead. That run was blown up to 27-6 over an 11-minute span. With EOU leading 33-21 with 2:03 left in the first half, Morgan Hofman hit a jumper for OIT to try and stop the bleeding.

But Eastern would go into the half with its largest lead of the opening half, 38-25, after a Kyle Miller three-pointer with two seconds left. The Mountaineers took advantage of its takeaways in the first half outscoring the Owls 16-5 on points off of turnovers.

EOU led by 20 points or more for all but 20 seconds in the final 10 minutes of play. Eastern's largest lead was 25 points with 41 seconds left, 70-45.

Brittany Cherry led the Lady Owls with a game-high 15 points. Aundrea Albright had a game-high nine rebounds. Eastern's Samantha Flett had a season-high seven assists.

Eastern Oregon will take a break for the holidays before returning to the court in Portland at No. 24 Concordia University on Dec. 30 at 5:30 p.m. The game will be video streamed through Penn Atlantic services and EOUSports.com.
