LA GRANDE, Ore. -- The No. 21 Eastern Oregon University men won the 166th meeting against Southern Oregon, 91-76, Friday night.
In a game that featured 52 fouls, the Mountaineers (8-4) (2-1) were able to hold off SOU to grab its second conference victory. Eastern outrebounded the Raiders, 49-28. EOU's 17 offensive rebounds were as many as Southern's 17 defensive rebounds.
The victory was the first this season for Eastern Oregon when they have allowed more than 70 points. The Mountaineers were previously 0-4 when giving up 70 or more points. EOU is 7-0 when opponents score fewer than 70 points.
Eastern's
Jordan Gregg made 9 of his 13 shots from the field and finished with 23 points. The senior's point total matches his conference career high which he set Dec. 4 at The Evergreen State.
Dan Stafford added 19 points for the Mountaineers, and
Thomas McCarthy had 11 points.
Josh Cottle recorded his season-high in points, rebounds, and assists Friday. The junior transfer from Weber State University scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, and had eight assists.
Jarrad Childs had a team-high 22 points for the Raiders (8-4) (0-3). Drew Herrera finished with 11 points, while Justonn Smith and Ryan Staker both had 10 points. Humphrey Jackson recorded a career-high 10 assists.
Eastern jumped out to an early lead and held on to the lead despite Southern closing the half on a 6-0 run. The Raiders took the lead back after a 14-2 run from the 1:42 mark in the first half until 16:24 in the second half. SOU had its largest lead, 52-47, with 14:19 left in regulation.
The 21st ranked Mountaineers will clash with the nation's No. 5 ranked team, Oregon Tech, Saturday night in La Grande. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
