Mountaineers Knock Out Eagles

Eastern volleyball soars to a 3-0 sweep over Eagles

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon University volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Northwest University Saturday, 25-15, 25-18, and 25-14.

“It was a good weekend for us at home,” EOU head coach Kaki Morehead said. “It was nice to have contributions from everyone on both nights. It's nice to have that carry over into tough games next weekend.”

Jessica Lea led the Mountaineers with 11 kills and 17 assists. Kaitlyn Duncan finished with a match-high 10 digs. Eastern had 42 kills to the Eagles 22. EOU had 40 assists and NU had 20. But the Eagles had 35 digs compared to Eastern Oregon's 33. EOU committed only eight errors while Northwest had 18. Eastern finished with a hitting percentage of .358 to Northwest's .049.

The Mountaineers opened the first game 6-0 and eased to the Game 1 victory. The second game started much tighter as the Eagles hung with EOU taking an early 6-5 lead. Eastern then went on an 11-4 run and took Game 2. Eastern Oregon stretched an 8-7 lead out to 16-7 in the final game with an 8-0 run that sealed the match.

Anu Akamine led the Eagles with eight kills, Elle Ottow had eight digs and Lauryn Ernster had a match-high 19 assists.

Eastern Oregon moves to 6-3 in the Cascade Conference and 8-6 overall. Northwest drops to 5-13 and 4-5 in the league. The Mountaineers travel to Oregon Tech next Friday, Oct. 9, and No. 16 Southern Oregon Saturday, Oct. 10, for their next matches.
