The Eastern Oregon football team is one win away from doing something the program has only done eight times in 80 years … reach six victories in one season.
The Mountaineers enter Saturday's homecoming game ranked No. 19 in the country and are ready to break more school records. EOU had its most wins in 1980 when it finished with eight victories and one loss to Oregon Tech. Since then Eastern has won six games in a season only five times.
Standing in the way of their sixth win is Montana-Western (2-4) (2-4). The Bulldogs have not been a model of consistency this season. Western's two victories have come against the Frontier Conference's bottom two teams, Rocky Mountain and Montana State-Northern. UMW fell at No. 2 Carroll's homecoming, 17-10.
The Bulldogs trailed Rocky Mountain 20-0 at halftime, before outscoring RMC in the second half 21-0 to win. Last week the Mountaineers also had to rally to beat Rocky in Billings. EOU trailed 36-21 entering the fourth quarter, but went on a 22-0 run over a ten-minute span to win the game.
Montana-Western led the conference's third best team, Montana Tech, 7-3 after the first quarter. The Orediggers then scored 13 unanswered points at home for the victory.
The Bulldogs last had a winning record in 2004 when they had a 7-4 record. In 2002 UMW went 9-3, and in 2003 they finished 7-4.
Eastern's
Chris Ware needs 274 yards Saturday to break his own school record for total offensive yards in a single season that he set last year. Ware passed Greg Stevens 18-year-old record of 2,447 yards in 2008 as a freshman. Ware has amassed 2,516 in seven games this year. If he can throw for 132 yards Saturday against Western he will break Stevens' passing yards in a season record. Chuck Nyby set EOU's record for passing yards in a career from 1997 to 2000 with 7,521 yards. Ware is at 4,638 in his two seasons at Eastern.
Ware ranks second nationally in total offensive yards, third in total passing yards, total offensive yards per game (359.4), and passing yards per game (325.9). One of his favorite receivers,
Kirk Miller, has scored 48 points which is 16th nationally.
Seath Kimball ranks fourth in the NAIA in total sacks (5.5), sixth in sacks per game (0.900) and tackles per game (11.0).
Montana-Western's Michah Mamiya is third in the conference in total offensive yards per game and passing yards per game behind Ware. Mamiya's favorite receiver, Craigh Cornelius, is second in the league and seventh in the country in receptions per game (7.2). The Bulldogs are second in the country in punt return yards per attempt (21.0).
The last time Western came to La Grande a play Eastern Oregon head coach
Tim Camp calls the "Greatest play in EOU football history" happened. Ware connected with
Gavin Watson on a last second score and the Mountaineers won in overtime, 41-38, on Oct. 25, 2008. Over the past five seasons Eastern is 19-10 at Community Stadium.
EOU holds a 9-4 all-time advantage over the Bulldogs. The last time Western won in La Grande was in 2002 when the Bulldogs defeated the Mountaineers in their season opener, 24-21.
