SPOKANE, Wash. - Eastern Oregon headed north to renew an old rivalry Saturday afternoon. For the first time since 2005 Eastern took on Whitworth University, a rivalry that ran 28 straight seasons dating back to 1978. The Mounties took on the Pirates on the road for their third game of the season and fell to the Pirates, 33-7.
The game started slow as Whitworth found the endzone midway through the first quarter but didn't succeed on a two-point conversion. The Pirates added onto their lead with a field goal in the second quarter to wrap up scoring in the first half making it 9-0.
EOU found the endzone in the third quarter thanks to a big run from
Aiden Patterson who stretched a run outside the tackle and found a seam to take it all the way to put the Mounties on the board. Eastern showed flashes of great football highlighted by a couple of big interceptions by
Zak Donato and
Blaine Shaw on the day, but it was Whitworth's day as they would pull away in the second half. The Pirates put up 10 in the third quarter and two touchdowns in the fourth to claim the win, 33-7.
Eastern will be back at home next Saturday, Sept. 17. The Mountaineers return to Frontier Conference action taking on Carroll College, who now sits at 1-1 losing to Montana Tech in their latest game. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Community Stadium.
