Mounties Fall in Season Opener


LA GRANDE, Ore. - Eastern Oregon opened the 2022 season with a Frontier matchup against Montana Tech on Saturday, Aug. 27. The 6 p.m. game at Community Stadium didn't go EOU's way as they fell to the visiting Montana Tech Orediggers 38-3 in their first home, night game since Oct. 12, 2019.

Montana Tech jumped out to an early lead and didn't look back, scoring twice in the first quarter. Jet Campbell threw two touchdown passes to start the game then left early in the second quarter. Things went quiet in the second with neither team scoring. Each team was within striking distance as Montana Tech missed a field goal around the 10 minute mark and EOU fumbled inside the ten with a minute remaining in the first half.

The Orediggers struck first again in the second half putting up 10 in the third quarter. Jet Campbell returned to the game and capped off a 52 yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run to jump up 21-0. With 5:45 on the clock Montana Tech put one through the uprights to make it a 24-point lead. The Mountaineers broke the shutout with a field goal at the end of the third quarter making it 24-3.  
Montana Tech responded with an eight-play, 51-yard scoring drive that ended in a Jet Campbell bootleg touchdown at the beginning of the fourth, adding to Montana Tech's lead, 31-3. Eastern would allow one final touchdown as Blake Counts punched in a 10-yard run to make it 38-3, Montana Tech. 

The Mounties return to action next Saturday on the road when they take on Montana Western (0-1). Kickoff is set for 12 p.m PT, 1 p.m. MT. Both teams will look for their first win of the season. EOU took the win in last year's matchup, 35-28.
