KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — No. 15 Mountaineers Softball bowed out of the conference tournament Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 20 and fourth-seeded College of Idaho by a score of 8-2.
With the loss, Eastern Oregon finishes third at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank. The Mounties will now await their NAIA postseason fate with the hopes of getting an at-large bid.
No. 20 College of Idaho 8, No. 15 Eastern Oregon 2
How it Happened
• Weather was unkind to both teams as three snow delays pushed the game to a longer time. Helping the Yotes (41-14) in the win was a five-run fourth inning.
• The Mounties (41-15) kept things close and led 2-1 going into the fourth. The fourth inning surge by C of I, coupled with stout defense held Eastern scoreless the rest of the way.
• In the first inning, Eastern grabbed the game's first lead on the swing of
Hannah Tyree. The freshman smacked a two-out solo home run to left to give the Mounties a 1-0 edge.
• C of I responded in the bottom of the opening frame and tied the game. A leadoff single got a runner on and after stealing second, she scored on an RBI single to right field to even the score at 1-1.
• Both teams gave up a walk in the second, but ultimately went scoreless. In the third, EOU went back ahead for the final time with a run scored to lead 2-1.
•
Caitlin Crist hit a leadoff triple to quickly get into scoring position. Two batters later, a Tyree sacrifice fly scored Crist to give the Mounties the one-run advantage.
• Eastern then worked a 1-2-3 frame to end the inning and look primed to build offensively. They got two runners on with no outs in the fourth, but C of I escaped the jam.
• The Yotes five-run fourth came on the efforts of five base hits. Snow flurries delayed the inning as well, but the Yotes' damage had been done as they surged ahead 6-2 and never looked back.
• The Mounties were held hitless through the final three innings of play. They managed to get just one runner on in that span, which came from a Yotes error.
• An RBI single in the fifth and a double in the sixth tacked on the two insurance runs for the Yotes as they held on for the six-run win.
