EOU Blanks Bushnell to Secure 4-0 Series Sweep

EUGENE, Ore. – Mountaineers Softball broke out the brooms for the second day in a row as they took down Bushnell University 2-0 on Saturday to secure a 4-0 sweep over the Beacons. Eastern Oregon shutout Bushnell in both games, winning 4-0 and 2-0. With the two wins, EOU is 12-5 overall and off to a 3-0 start in league play.

Game 1 – Eastern Oregon 4, Bushnell 0
How it Happened

• The first game of day two saw both teams rack up five hits, but four errors by the Beacons (5-9, 3-4 CCC) plagued the team in the loss. EOU had just one on the day in the shutout victory.
• All four runs for the Mountaineers came in the second inning, while Bushnell threatened a few times early on in the contest. Three hits and a Beacon error were key in second for EOU.
• Eastern loaded the bases in the second thanks to a walk, a hit, and an error. Two batters later, Caitlin Crist delivered a bases clearing triple to left center. Her hit gave EOU the 3-0 edge.
• On the next at bat, Madison Stateler brought Crist home an RBI sacrifice fly to left. The sacrifice gave EOU the lead 4-0 and it remained there the rest of the game.
• The Beacons managed to get a pair of hits in the first and third innings, but each time EOU escaped the jam to leave runners stranded. The only other hit for Bushnell was in the second.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Caitlin Crist was 1-3 with three RBI and scored a run. 
Madison Stateler tallied one RBI and batted 1-3 in the win.
Karsyn Zaragoza also went 1-3 and scored a run.
Hannah Tyree knocked a pair of hits, going 2-4.
• Starter Mckenna Stallings (3-2) pitched four innings and had a game best four strikeouts.
Amanda Smith earned the save and fanned two batters in three innings pitched.

For the Beacons
• Alyssa Ferreira batted 1-4.
• Elizabeth Betsch wen t1-2 and drew a walk.
• Sam Silver (2-4) pitched a complete game, but did not register a single strikeout.

Game 2 – Eastern Oregon 2, Bushnell 0
How it Happened

• The Mounties closed out the day with another shutout in the series finale. EOU tallied seven hits in the win and did not have a single error. Bushnell had two and managed just three hits.
• The Mountaineers went ahead 1-0 in the first inning on a pair of hits. Caitlin Crist drew a leadoff walk and stole the next two bases. She scored on Madison State RBI single.
• Defensively, Eastern held Bushnell to just one hit over the first four innings. Starter Amanda Smith worked 1-2-3 outings in the first, third, and fourth innings to keep EOU up by one.
• EOU scored its final run in the fifth. The Beacons two errors came in the fifth, which allowed Eastern to score the unearned run
Rhyanne Oates scored the second run. She led off with a bunt and got to second a throwing error. She then stole third before fielding error at first base allowed her to come home.
• Smith surrendered hits in the fifth and sixth, but nothing came of either. She ended the game with another 1-2-3 frame to secure the win.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Rhyanne Oates hit 2-3 and scored a run.
Madison Stateler went 1-3 with an RBI.
Caitlin Crist scored a run and drew a walk.
Amanda Smith (5-3) pitched a complete game and had six strikeouts in the win.

For the Beacons
• Braydi Johnson tallied one hit in her lone at bat.
• Alyssa Ferreira and Faith Wayman both hit 1-3.
• Sam Silver (2-5) pitched a second straight complete game in the loss.

By the Numbers
0 - EOU did not have a single batter strikeout on day two.
6 - The Mounties struck out six batters in both games.
15 - Eastern has hit at least one double now in their last 15 games.
2 - The two shutouts on Saturday are the first ones of the year for EOU.
6 - EOU is on a six-game winning streak, which is the longest under Head Coach Nicole Christian.
