Mounties Sweep Beacons at Home in Sunday Twin Bill

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Mountaineers Baseball bounced back on day two of their home opening weekend with a pair of wins Sunday over the visiting Bushnell Beacons. Eastern Oregon shined offensively, winning 8-2 and 16-13 over the Beacons to secure their first home wins of the season.

Game 1 – Eastern Oregon 8, Bushnell 2
How it Happened

• The Mountaineers (9-24, 2-6 CCC) racked up 10 hits in the win and played a clean game defensively. The Beacons (8-22, 6-2 CCC) had five hits and committed one error.
• Bushnell scored the game's first run in the opening frame as an RBI single made it 1-0. The Beacons did not score again though until the ninth.
• Eastern tacked on its first two runs in the bottom of the first on the swing of Elliott Marks. He delivered a two-run homer over center field to make it a 2-1 score.
• The lead for the Mounties grew to 3-1 in the second when Adrian Roa hit an RBI single, scoring Easton Watterson. Defensively, EOU relied on starter Nick Jennings who was superb in seven innings pitched.
• Jennings worked a 1-2-3 frame in the third to keep EOU up by two runs. EOU tacked on another run in fourth as the lone error from Bushnell allowed Garrett Beckman to score and make it 4-1.
• The bats once again took over for EOU in the fifth as they tallied three hits and scored three runs. Plating all three runs home was Jamie Powell who smacked a three-run homer to center.
• The eighth and final run for EOU came in the seventh as Marks once again delivered. He hit an RBI double to score Hector Carreon who got on with a leadoff single.
• The Beacons mustered their final run in the ninth with an RBI double after a leadoff walk. Reliever Jacob Farnsworth then forced a groundout and two strikeouts to close out the game.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Elliott Marks batted 3-3 with three RBI and a run scored to go along with a home run.
Jamie Powell tallied three RBI and hit 1-3 with a run scored with his hit being a homer.
Matt Garcia went 2-3 in the win and scored one run. 
McKlane Elgin tallied two hits in three at bats and scored one run.
Nick Jennings (1-1) pitched seven complete in the win and struck out a game-high eight batters.

For the Beacons
• Jacob Stoner hit 2-4 and had one RBI.
• Brendan Frazier batted 1-3 with a run scored. He also pitched one frame and struck out a batter.
• Jeff Fripp batted 1-4 in the loss and had one RBI.
• Kai Keamo (1-3) suffered the loss. He pitched four frames and fanned two batters.

Game 2 – Eastern Oregon 16, Bushnell 13
How it Happened

• The series finale was a high-scoring affair as the two squads combined for 29 runs and totaled 31 hits. The game lasted three hours and 42 minutes with EOU holding on for a three-run win.
• Playing a big role in the Mounties' win was the number of doubles hit. They racked up nine in the win and surrendered just two on defense.
• Defensive miscues hurt Bushnell in the loss as the team committed four errors to just one by EOU. The Mounties also hit two home runs in the win, while the Beacons had just one.
• Despite the high offensive output by both squads, situational hitting favored Eastern. They left just six runners stranded, while Bushnell stranded 12.
• The first run came in the first as Brooks Dyer scored on a balk. The Mounties tacked on two runs in the second thanks to an error and a Dyer RBI double to go up 3-0.
• The Beacons scored in the third with an RBI double to get within two, 3-1. They then exploded for six runs in the fourth to go ahead 7-3.
• An RBI sacrifice bunt scored the first run, making it 3-2, before Bushnell hit a grand slam to left field to go up 6-3. The Beacons made it 7-3 with a sacrifice fly before EOU ended the frame.
• The swing of Elliott Marks got EOU back into the contest in the bottom of the fifth. He smacked his second homer of the day, hitting a two-run shot over left center to cut the score to 7-5.
• Eastern tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth and ultimately scored four runs to jump ahead 9-7. Two doubles and a single gave the Mounties a two-run edge.
• Tying the game was McKlane Elgin who delivered a two RBI to right field. Dyer immediately scored Elgin with a double to left center. Matt Garcia made it 9-7 with an RBI single, scoring Dyer.
• In the seventh both teams scored four runs to add to the offensive barrage. Bushnell scored four runs on an RBI single, two RBI double, and another RBI single to lead 11-9.
• The Mounties tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with an Elgin two RBI double. Dyer gave EOU the lead back with an RBI double, scoring Elgin. Hector Carreon made it 13-11 with a base hit to bring in Dyer.
• The final five runs of the contest came in the eighth inning. The Beacons two runs came with a deep two RBI single to right field, tying the game at 13-all.
• In the bottom of the eighth, Garcia got Eastern within one, 13-12, on a leadoff home run to center field. Carsten Manderbach then hit an RBI double to score Harrison Goyette and ultimately scored on a Bushnell error to put EOU up 16-13 for good.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Brooks Dyer hit 3-4, all doubles, with three RBI and three runs scored.
McKlane Elgin also had two doubles, going 2-4 with a game best four RBI and scored three runs.
Matt Garcia batted 2-4, hit a home run, had two RBI, and scored one run.
Hector Carreon was 2-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Elliott Marks batted 1-3 with a homer and had two RBI to go along with a run scored.
Slayder Watterson (1-2) earned the win, pitching 1.2 innings in relief.
• Reliever Zach Brown had a game-high four strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.

For the Beacons
• Jeff Fripp had five RBI, hitting 2-4 with a home run and scored a run.
• Brandon Reed batted 4-6 and had one RBI.
• Jacob Stoner went 2-4 with two RBI and scored one run.
• Jordan Wilson was 2-5 with a run scored.
• Peyton Hino hit 1-4 with three runs scored.
• Starter Jahshua Yacapin pitched five complete in the start and had three strikeouts.

By the Numbers
16 - Eastern tallied a season-high 16 hits in the series finale win.
9 - The Mounties knocked a season best nine doubles in the series finale.
4 - EOU hit four home runs on day two, with two in each game.
5 - Matt Garcia has now tallied at least one hit in the last five games. 
16 - The Mounties' 16 runs scored in the series finale ties a season-high in a game this year.
2 - Eastern picked up its first two home wins of the season in Sunday's sweep.

• The Mountaineers will begin the month of April on the road for a four-game series at British Columbia in Canada. Eastern will face UBC April 2-3 with day one action beginning at 1 p.m., while day two will start at 11 a.m.
