Mountaineers Drop Day Two Twin Bill Against Raiders

ASHLAND, Ore. – Mountaineers Softball was unable to secure the series win over No. 6 Southern Oregon on Monday as they dropped both games. Eastern Oregon fell by finals of 6-1 and 8-0 as the Raiders secured the overall series win and the conference series win, 2-1.

Game 1 – No. 6 Southern Oregon 6, Eastern Oregon 1
How it Happened

• The Raiders (22-6, 7-2 CCC) tallied a dozen hits in the CCC series finale to secure the conference win, 2-1. They committed one error in the five-run win.
• Eastern (17-8, 7-2 CCC) managed just four hits in the loss. The team's lone run was scored in the sixth inning.
• The first run for the Raiders came in the first frame with an RBI triple. After a scoreless second, SOU tacked on two more runs in the third to jump ahead 3-0.
• The final three runs for Southern were scored over the next two innings. They tacked on one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to hold a 6-0 advantage.
• The Mountaineers' one run came on a bases loaded walk by the Raiders. Scoring the lone run for EOU was Taylor Dow.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Madison Stateler hit 1-3 in the contest.
Grace Gaither went 1-2 at the plate and drew a walk.
Amanda Smith (8-2) pitched 4.1 innings in the start and had four strikeouts.

For the Raiders
• Deja Acosta batted 3-4 with one RBI and scored two runs.
• Sarah Kerling went 2-3 at the plate and scored a pair of runs.
• Ashton Cathey hit 1-2 with two RBI.
• Cayla Williams (7-0) pitched a complete game and had seven strikeouts.

Game 2 – No. 6 Southern Oregon 8, Eastern Oregon 0 (5 Innings)
How it Happened

• The Raiders made quick work of Eastern in the finale. They tallied 12 hits yet again and just one error. The Mountaineers mustered just two hits in the loss and had three errors.
• Southern managed to score a run in each of the first three frames to grab a 3-0 edge. EOU had runners get on in the first two frames, but all were left stranded.
• In the fourth, EOU once again got two more runners on hoping to score, but the Raiders held them. Southern then racked up four runs on three hits and two EOU errors to lead 7-0.
• The game came to an early close in the fifth as the Raiders scored one run to enact the run-rule. A pair of base hits and a sacrifice bunt scored the run to give SOU the win.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Caitlin Crist had both hits for EOU, going 2-3 at the plate.
Audrey Kime drew a pair of walks in the loss.
Kaylin Winans (0-1) suffered the loss and pitched three complete innings.

For the Raiders
• Erika Marquez was a perfect 2-2 at the plate and scored three runs.
• Sarah Kerling went 2-3 in the win with one RBI and scored a run.
• Phelicity Fa'aita (5-1) pitched a complete game in the win and had five strikeouts. She also batted 1-3 and had three RBI.

By the Numbers
12 - EOU surrendered 12 hits in both games on day two.
4 - The Mounties drew a series-high four walks against SOU in the finale.
0 - Eastern did not commit a single error in game one of day two.

• Should Mother Nature allow it, EOU will return home this weekend to La Grande to face University of Providence March 25-26. Day one action begins at 2 p.m. with day two starting at 11 a.m.
