Blues Take Down Mountaineers in Walla Walla

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Mountaineer Women's Lacrosse succumbed to a tough road loss Saturday morning in a 20-4 defeat against the Whitman College Blues. With the loss, Eastern Oregon falls to 1-3 on the year.

How it Happened
• Helping the Blues (1-0) secure the season opening win was a defensive effort that held EOU to without a shot in the first half.
• On the offensive side, Whitman racked up 22 shots in the first two periods and had 34 for the game. Defensively, the Blues held EOU to just four shots.
• A fast start was key for the Blues as they racked up 11 first period goals to seize control of the contest.
• In the second period, Whitman tacked on three more goals to lead 14-0 at the break. Through the first 30 minutes, goalie Brooklynn Wright had four saves. 
• A big help in the Blues fast start was the draw control. They had 11 go in their favor in the first period and had three in the second frame to control the tempo.
• The Mountaineers ended their scoring drought in the third period on a goal from Madisson Hoyt. She scored with 7:19 to go in the frame for her second career goal.
• Going into the fourth, Whitman held a 17-1 lead thanks to three goals scored in the third.
• In the final 15 minutes of action, both teams put up three goals to bring the score to its final of 20-4.
• Tacking on the second goal of the day for the Mountaineers was Kiana Watchman. She found the back of the net at the 8:54 mark to score her first collegiate goal.
• Two minutes later, Hoyt scored for a second time in the contest. Her goal at the 6:42 mark gave the freshman her first multi-goal game in her career.
• The final Eastern goal of the day was on the efforts of Sydney Vopat. The freshman scored at the 3:40 minute mark of the fourth for her first career goal.

Mountaineers Stat Leaders
Madisson Hoyt racked up two goals and finished with two shots, both on goal.
Sydney Vopat and Kiana Watchman both scored a goal in the loss.
Kate McAfee and Watchman led the way in caused turnovers with two, respectively.
Claire Bever had a team best two draw control wins.
• In net, Brooklynn Wright racked up 10 saves.

For the Blues
• Gracie Maulik scored four goals for a hat trick and had four assists for eight total points.
• Erin Magnuson scored four goals in the win and led the way in draw controls with seven.
• Madeline Sherry was second in points with six on three goals and three assists.
• Eliza Daigle also racked up four goals in the win.
• Goalie Sophia Maroulis had four saves in her first win of the season.

By the Numbers
1 - Madisson Hoyt notched her first career multiple-goal game.
1 - Kiana Watchman and Sydney Vopat both scored their first collegiate goals.
4 - Goalie Brooklynn Wright has racked up 10-plus saves in all four starts this season.
