Mountaineers Drop Home Opener to Bearcats

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Mountaineer Women's Lacrosse suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon, dropping a 16-7 contest to Willamette in the team's home opener. With the loss, Eastern Oregon is now 1-1 on the year.

How it Happened
• Helping the Bearcats (1-0) was a 36-20 edge in total shots and a 31-15 advantage in shots on goal.
• In the game's opening frame, the Bearcats had a fast start on both sides of the ball. They scored seven goals and held EOU scoreless to lead 7-0 going into the second.
• The pace for Willamette did not slow down as they were able to score five more goals. Eastern ended their scoring drought with two and went into the halftime break trailing 12-2.
Samantha Buckley scored the first goal for EOU on a man-up possession with 7:31 left to play. The Bearcats then responded scoring twice to go ahead 11-1.
• Goal No. 2 for EOU came with 4:21 left to go in the half on a shot by Marisol Trevino. Saydee Hetrick found her on the cut inside-the eight meter arc for the goal to make it 11-2.
• WU tacked on one final goal in the last two minutes to give the team a 10-goal edge at the break.
• In the second half, EOU bounced back with a better rhythm on offense. Their defense also held the Bearcats to just five total goals in the final 30 minutes of play.
• The Bearcats tacked on two goals in the third, while EOU scored three. WU scored in the first three minutes to jump ahead 13-2 before the Mounties went on a 3-0 run.
• Buckley once again found the back of the net for her second goal with 8:49 to play in the third. Three minutes later, Claire Bever scored on a breakaway to bring the score to 13-4.
• In the final 2:15 of the third, Kate McAfee capped off the 3-0 surge with a goal. The Bearcats ended their drought with a goal in the final 13 seconds to go ahead 14-5.
• Defense fell in WU's favor, holding the Mountie to just one goal in the fourth. The Bearcats scored three, with two coming in the first 10 minutes.
Madisson Hoyt tacked on the final goal for EOU in what was her first collegiate goal. She scored with 1:10 to play in the game to bring the score to the final of 17-6.

Samantha Buckley notched two goals and finished four shots, with each one being on goal.
Madisson Hoyt scored once and tallied five draw controls on the day.
Kate McAfee scored a goal and won two draw controls.
• Goalie Brooklynn Wright tallied 14 saves in her second career start.

For the Bearcats
• Lily Bachiochi notched three goals and had three assists to lead the offense.
• Laura Kelly tallied five points on three goals and a pair of assists.
• Tati Klenk scored three goals in the win and had one assist.
• In net, Shelby Sawyer racked up nine saves for the win.

By the Numbers
1- Saturday's game was the first official game in EOU Women's Lacrosse history.
2 - Brooklynn Wright has tallied 10-plus saves in back-to-back starts.
2 - Samantha Buckley has scored two or more goals in two starts this year.

• The Mountaineers wrap up the weekend against another NCAA foe in Linfield University on Sunday, Feb. 20. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Community Stadium.
