CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Cascade Collegiate Conference announced its Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Athletes of the Week. Eastern Oregon University had four players make the list, all of which were women.
The Mountaineers swept the Women's Soccer Player of the Week awards and took home two of the three Volleyball Player of the Week awards.
Kiara Fontanilla was tabbed the Women's Soccer Defender of the Week, while
Lindsay Balkenbush was the Offensive Player of the Week. In volleyball,
Madison Morgan was the Attacked of the Week, while
Kiley McMurtrey was the Defender of the Week.
Fontanilla got the starting nod at goalkeeper in both wins for the Mountaineer women. She has two shutouts on the year to start 2-0 in net. She tallied eight saves for Eastern Oregon in both wins inside Community Stadium last week.
Balkenbush is one of three players that has scored a goal this season for the Mounties. In the 2-0 win over Northwest University, Balkenbush scored the gamewinning goal in the first period for EOU as they went on to shutout the Eagles 2-0 at home. In two starts she had taken two shots with both coming on goal.
Morgan led No. 9 EOU in hitting at .522 and totaled 12 kills in a 3-0 road sweep at College of Idaho. She had five kills in the second and third set, respectively. Morgan is hitting .389 for the season in five match starts as a true freshman.
McMurtrey had a game-high 21 digs in Mountaineers' 3-0 road sweep at College of Idaho. She tallied two service aces and assist in the win. McMurtrey has posted double-digit digs in 63-straight matches dating back to the 2018 season and has 1,848 career digs, which is nine away from becoming all-time leader at EOU.
