CALDWELL, Idaho – Eastern Oregon University Softball once again split its pod series with Carroll College and College of Idaho to wrap up non-conference play Sunday afternoon. EOU downed the Saints 10-1 in five innings in the first game before falling 9-3 to the No. 17 Yotes in game two. With the 1-1 split the Mountaineers move to 3-7 on the year.
Game 1 – Eastern Oregon 10, Carroll College 1 (5 Innings)
How it Happened
• The Mountaineers totaled 14 hits in the win and limited Carroll College (1-3) to just three hits. The two teams did combine for five errors with EOU committing three.
• Multiple runs scored in the first, second and fourth inning were the difference maker in ending the game in five innings. EOU totaled two in the first and second, respectively, and exploded for five runs in the fourth. The only inning that did not have multiple runs was the third with just one.
• Eastern was the home team in the second go around against Carroll College.
Amanda Smith got the start in the circle and started her complete performance with a 1-2-3 outing in the first. In the bottom half,
Madison Stateler led off with a double to left. She eventually got to third with the help of a walk and a stolen base before a throwing error allowed her to score.
•
Taylor Dow drew the walk that helped Stateler and she managed to get to second on a stolen base, while the previous error moved her to third.
Jordan Henley then plated Dow home with an RBI groundout to give EOU the 2-0 lead after one.
• The Saints got a leadoff hit in the second before EOU closed out the frame to get the offense back out to the plate. A
Kayla Berg leadoff single followed by a Smith single got two runners on for the Mounties.
Glori Cheevers brought in the first run with an RBI groundout to second base.
Mckenna Stallings followed her up with an RBI base hit to center field and Smith made it home to give EOU a 4-0 edge.
• The third inning had the potential to go poorly for EOU as all three errors by the Mountaineers came in the top of the third. Despite the mistakes, EOU did not allow a hit or give up a run. The lone run for eastern came when Smith hit a RBI sacrifice fly to score
Haley Ebner who led off the inning with a single to center.
• Leading 5-0, Smith and the EOU defense worked another 1-2-3 inning in the fourth to keep the Saints' from scoring. EOU's five-run outing got started with a leadoff home run from Stallings to left field. Two batters later Dow got on base with a single and was immediately brought home on an RBI triple from Henley to make it a 7-0 game.
• Run No. 3 of the fourth came on the efforts of Ebner who hit a single to left field to plate home Henley. Following Ebner, back-to-back singles from
Makenzie Chambers and Smith, respectively, scored pinch runner
Alaina Wright. The fifth run came on a field error from Carroll College which allowed Chambers to score and make a 10- advantage for EOU.
• The Saints lone run came in the top of the fifth thanks to a leadoff double, single, and fielder's choice in that order. It made little difference as Smith and the defense regrouped and closed out the game to give EOU the win.
