Nighthawks Take Day One Over Mounties in Non-Conference Bout

NAMPA, Idaho – Eastern Oregon University Softball was back in action Wednesday afternoon as the Mountaineers picked up a non-conference four-game series at NCAA Division II institute Northwest Nazarene University. The day one doubleheader went in favor of NNU who won by finals of 6-0 and 9-1.

Game 1 – Northwest Nazarene 6, Eastern Oregon 0
How it Happened
• Helping NNU (2-0) pick up its first win of the season was six total hits, while EOU (0-4) managed just two. On the defensive side of the ball, NNU totaled two errors for the game, while the Mounties had just one.
• The Nighthawks grabbed the game's first lead in the opening inning. Despite not getting a single hit, NNU tacked on two early runs with the help of four drawn walks in the first five at bats. The first run came on a walk before an RBI groundout made it 2-0 for NNU.
• Eastern looked to respond but only managed two hits through the first three innings. For the Nighthawks, they opened up their lead in the bottom of the third scoring four runs on three and on an error by EOU.
• A leadoff walk followed by an RBI double, a single, and an error allowed NNU to score two runs and go up 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Following the error, a runner stole second and a two RBI single up the middle extended the Nighthawks lead to 6-0 before EOU closed out the frame.
• Neither team scored for the remainder of the contest. Things got interesting in the top of the seventh as the Mountaineers managed to get runners on with the help of two NNU errors, but the Nighthawks held off Eastern to secure the 6-0 win.

Game 2 – Northwest Nazarene 9, Eastern Oregon 1 (5 Innings)
How it Happened
• The Nighthawks offensive momentum from game one carried into game two as they took the Mounties 9-1 in five innings to secure the day one sweep. NNU outhit EOU 14-3 in the game and committed just one error, while EOU had two.
• The Nighthawks' first run came in the opening frame. EOU managed to get outs in the first two at bats to start the bottom of the first. NNU then hit a double and drew a walk before an RBI single through the left side allowed a runner to score and make it 1-0.
• The second inning ended quickly as NNU worked a 1-2-3 frame, while EOU gave up just one hit in four at bats. In the third, NNU went 1-2-3 against the EOU bats and its offense bounced back scoring a pair of runs.
• A leadoff single followed by a double to left center field plated home the first run for the Nighthawks in the third frame. The Mounties managed to get their first out on the next at bat, but a throwing error and a single in the next two plays allowed the second runner to score and give NNU a 3-0 edge after three.
• The Mountaineers lone run of the day came in the top of the fourth. Madison Stateler led off with a single to third and got to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Two batters later, a deep single to right field from Haley Ebner scored State and cut EOU's deficit just two runs, 3-1.
• NNU answered in a big way in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs and totaled six hits. Three hits and an EOU error in the first four at bats allowed NNU to get the run back and push its lead back to three at 4-1.
• Following a pitching change by the Mounties, the Nighthawks hit back-to-back singles allowing two runs to cross home plate, one of which was unearned. Eastern was able to close out the inning but not before the Nighthawks pushed the lead to 7-1.
• Eastern looked to build upon its efforts from the fourth, but NNU quickly worked another 1-2-3 outing to thwart any idea of a comeback. EOU managed to get the first two batters out to start the fifth before a hit by pitch, a double, and a single allowed NNU to score its ninth run and end the game early by a final of 9-1.
