National Athletic Training Month: Thew, Ishii & Flom

LA GRANDE, Ore.  – With March recognized as National Athletic Training Month, EOU Athletics would like to distinguish its three athletic trainers, Chris Thew, Hilary Ishii, and Liz Flom, who provide constant support and care to the program's student-athletes.

"Our trainers work long hours in an often thankless job," said director of athletics Anji Weissenfluh. "They are truly the ones who have our student-athletes ready to compete day in and day out. And often our trainers do more than just tackle injuries—they turn into confidants, sounding boards, and friends. I am incredibly thankful that we have such a wonderful athletic training staff, and I appreciate what they do for all of our student-athletes and coaches."

National Athletic Training Month is held every March by the National Athletic Trainers' Association in order to spread awareness about the important work of athletic trainers.

Thew became the head athletic trainer prior to the 2019-20 academic year, coming over from Western Oregon University. Thew works predominantly with EOU's football and men's basketball programs, but oversees athletic training for all EOU teams. With the department earning CCC Training Staff of the Year for 2018-19, Thew has continued the high quality care given to both EOU and visiting student-athletes. He graduated from Eastern Oregon in 2003 with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Health with an emphasis in Athletic Training.

"I was very impressed with how well Chris worked with my program and the athletes overall," said head football coach Tim Camp. "Thank you for putting in extra hours without complaining. I am grateful for your easy-going manner that brings comfort to myself and our athletes. I am looking forward to the coming year and seeing how far we can go. Keep up the great work!"

Ishii joined the EOU staff in January of 2016 after serving as an assistant ATC at Eastern New Mexico University from 2012-2015. Ishii has worked with a number of teams in her fourth year with EOU, currently overseeing training duties for men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's track and field. Ishii received her degrees from Eastern Washington University and Cameron University.

"I am so thankful for the three trainers that we have in our training room," said head volleyball coach Kaki McLean Morehead. "They are the reason the training room has a wonderful atmosphere where student-athletes feel welcome and enjoy getting treatment. Their continued selflessness and giving attitudes are the reason for our athletic program's successes and we are so thankful for all that they do every single day."

Flom joined EOU at the beginning of 2019, bringing with her a plethora of experience that made her a key addition to the EOU Sport Medicine Staff. From 2016-2018, Flom was the Athletic Trainer for all sports at Northwest Christian. She currently works with the volleyball, men's and women's wrestling, women's basketball and softball teams. Flom received her Master's in Athletic Training from Montana State University in 2009. In 2007 she graduated from EOU with a bachelor's degree in Physical Education & Health with Exercise Science Emphasis.

"With new stunting expectations being done on the cheer and dance team, I always know I can ask any of the three trainers we have for help," said head cheer and dance coach Kathleen Brown. "They are all so helpful, thank you to each of them."

EOU Athletics would like to thank all its trainers for the countless hours they have put in and the efforts they have put forth to keep everyone safe during the COVID-19 crisis.
