Mounties Bring Home Wagon Wheel with 29-12 Win at SOU

ASHLAND, Ore. – The No. 18 Eastern Oregon men's wrestling team took the last six matches of the night to claim a 29-12 Cascade Conference dual win over Southern Oregon on Saturday night.

The Mountaineers (15-5) used their four consecutive NAIA top-18 ranked wrestlers to knock off the Raiders on the road and bring the Wagon Wheel back home.

After SOU won by a forfeit to start the matchup, the Raiders got wins from 13th-ranked Justin Coon at 133, 10-5 over EOU's Monte Zufelt, and 149-pounder Layn Pannkuk, 6-3 over the Mounties' Jared Brant.

The SOU lead was 12-4 at that point before the Mountaineers took over. Jesse Camacho won by a 10-4 decision against Matt Peterson at 157 pounds, and John Bittinger won by a 13-5 major decision against Noah Talavera at 165 pounds.

Then, EOU's ranked quartet finished the Raiders off, starting with No. 7 Keegan Mulhill's third-round technical fall over Tanner Sallee at 174 and No. 11 Marco Retano's first-round pin of Josh Hammers at 184 that made it 22-12. No. 15-ranked Ryan Redford clinched the win with a 7-4 win against Cylus Hoke at 197 and No. 18 Noel Orozco finished the night with a 10-1 major decision against Ismael De La Torre Jr. at heavyweight.

The victory gives EOU three-straight wins against Southern Oregon in duals dating back to the 2018-19 season.

The Blue and Gold finish up the regular season with a 15-5 record in duals and a 6-2 mark in the CCC, both program bests since returning in 2016. The Mounties will next be in action at the CCC Championships in Atherton, California on Feb. 21 and 22.
