Mountaineers Defeated by Yotes 48-12 in Opener

CALDWELL, Idaho. – The Eastern Oregon football team suffered a 48-12 defeat in the season opener at No. 15 College of Idaho on Saturday.
 
The Yotes took the game opening drive 82 yards to go ahead 7-0 and never looked back. C of I had a 20-0 lead at halftime and 27-0 early in the third quarter. The Mountaineers were able to cut the deficit to two possessions, scoring back-to-back touchdowns five minutes apart.
 
Quarterback Kai Quinn capped off a nine play, 68-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Running back Kaler Moore followed on EOU's next drive with a four-yard scoring run. EOU did not convert the two-point try and trailed 27-12 with 1:13 to play in the third quarter.
 
The Yotes responded, however, outscoring the Mounties 21-0 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
 
C of I used a dominant rushing attack to possess the ball for over 35 minutes. They amassed 377 rushing yards on 55 attempts, including five rushing touchdowns. Nick Calzaretta had 124 yards while quarterback Darius Peterson had 114.
 
On the Mountaineer side, Quinn threw for 184 yards on 17-of-35 passing. Isaiah Thomas had four catches for 62 yards and Saige Wilkerson caught three for 60 yards.
 
Defensively, safety Haziel Ledezma and linebacker Isaiah Cranford paced EOU with eight tackles each. Freshman defensive lineman Dakota Hibbs recorded the team's lone sack.
 
The Mountaineers will remain on the road, visiting another rival in No. 20 Southern Oregon on Sep. 7 at 1 p.m. in Ashland, Ore.
