EOU Women’s Basketball Drops Close Contest at OIT

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Facing one of the hottest teams in the NAIA, the No. 18 Eastern Oregon women's basketball team fell in a close road battle Saturday night, 63-60 at Oregon Tech in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

Winners of eight in a row entering the game, the Owls (10-4, 4-0 CCC), who were receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll, did not back away from second half and third quarter deficits against the three-time defending champion Mountaineers (9-5, 3-1 CCC) on Saturday. EOU led 34-30 at halftime and 49-43 after three quarters, but remained in a battle late into the fourth quarter as both teams traded blows.

The Mounties led 57-51 with 5:52 to play in the fourth quarter, but saw OIT score 10-straight points to take a 61-57 lead with 2:46 remaining. Senior forward Rachel Fielder hit a big three-pointer with under two minute to play to cut the deficit to one point, 61-60. The Mountaineers went 0-for-4 on their final shots of the game, however, with two chances at a game-tying three pointer. OIT's layup with 13 seconds remaining gave them the three-point victory, 63-60.

The Blue and Gold shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, but saw their shooting hands go cold in the second half, down to 26.67 percent on 8-for-30. The Owls found their hot hands in the fourth quarter, making 8-of-13 field goals on their way to the win.

Sophomore forward Beverly Slater finished with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Megan Still finished with 10 points off the bench, while senior Rachel Fielder and junior Taylor Stricklin each had nine points. Fielder added seven rebounds and two steals while Stricklin posted six rebounds.

Oregon Tech had three scorers in double-digits with nine total scorers. Maddyson Tull had 12 points, followed by Kristin Farrell and Amanda Constant with 10 apiece.

The Mountaineers will be off until after the New Year, when they will host Northwest Christian on Jan. 3 and Corban on Jan. 4.
