Mountaineers Claim 2nd CCC Tourney Title with 2-1 Win over Rocky

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – With the hopes of a potential third-straight national tournament appearance on the line, the Eastern Oregon women's soccer team knew there was only way to guarantee this to become a reality: win the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank. The Mountaineers hopes came to fruition on Friday afternoon, defeating Rocky Mountain 2-1 in the finals of the tournament.

The win is the team's second CCC tournament title after winning its first in 2017, head coach Jacob Plocher's first season at the helm. Now in three years as head coach, the Mountaineers (15-2-2) have won two regular season and two tournament titles and reached the national tournament in all three seasons.

Shooting out of a cannon was senior leading goal scorer Nan Kiebert. Just 59 seconds into the match, Kiebert got the scoring started with her 12th goal of the season. After a quick foul, senior Josee Bassett took a free kick from about 40 yards out. The senior defender put the ball into a mass of bodies in front of the net, where junior Morgan Farrington was able to clear it to the outside right to the feet of Kiebert, who made no mistake on her shot to put EOU 1-0.

That was all the fireworks for the first half, despite more strong chances for EOU, as they led 7-1 in shots through 45 minutes.

The Battlin' Bears (13-4-2) had their own top scorer, however, as co-CCC Player of the Year Lauryn Gamache tied the score in the 59th minute.

Often times, a tying goal can be depleting for a team's morale. But not for this Eastern Oregon team, who used it as fire to get the next one. And they did just that.

Less than two minutes later, senior Jenna Jensen battled a defender right on her, get the ball out into space to her right in the box and lace a perfect shot into the top-right corner of the net past a diving Maia Wetzel to reclaim the lead for good for the Mountaineers.

The Mounties solidified the defense the rest of the way, earning the 2-1 victory and another trophy for the cabinet.

Overall, the Blue and Gold out shot RMC 17-7 and 8-2 in shots on goal. Kiebert led the team with three shots while Jensen had two. Junior goalkeeper Savannah Hutchinson made one save as she earned her third win of the tourney, filling in remarkably for injured All-American keeper Cydni Cottrell.

The Mountaineers will next get ready for the NAIA Championships, which begin Nov. 22 at host sites. The team will find out their first round opponent and location, with hopes of hosting the first round, on Monday, Nov. 18 at 9 a.m. Pacific time on the NAIA Championships Selection Show. EOU will host a showing of the selection show with the team in the booster room in Quinn Coliseum.
