Rose Brothers Lead Men’s Soccer to Improbable Shootout Win over OIT

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Trailing 3-1 in the shootout, with just two shooters left, the hopes for the Eastern Oregon men's soccer team to advance to the semifinals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, looked bleak. But in stepped sophomore goal keeper Max Rose, who was yet to make a save until that point. However, not another goal would be scored on Rose the rest of the way.

With the Mountaineers (9-8-2) shooting first, senior Elvis Pavon came up big and kept the team's hopes alive with a goal to make the score 3-2 in the shootout. The Owls just needed one goal on one of the next two shots, but the first shooter lifted it high over the net. Next for EOU was junior Joaquin Bermejillo, who calmly tied the score 3-3 with a goal.

From there, it was all Rose. Max made back-to-back saves as the shootout went past the original five shooters. The seventh shooter for the Mountaineers stepped up and it was none other than Max's older brother, senior defender Jack Rose. The elder brother, potentially playing in his final game, scored a clutch goal in the seventh round of the shootout to put EOU up 4-3. Max stepped back in between the pipes, and for the third shot in a row, denied the Owls to send the EOU men's soccer team to a victorious frenzy.

The Mountaineers dominated the pace of play, but faced a tough goalkeeper in Mitchell Jillson, who made six saves in the shutout and another two saves in the shootout. EOU outshot the Owls 23-3 for the match and 7-0 in shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net through 110 minutes of play.

The Blue and Gold had multiple strong chances that narrowly missed, using a 12-6 lead in corner kicks to their advantage.

While the first half was played tightly by both teams, the field opened up in the second half when OIT's John Sarna received two yellow cards just three minutes apart, equating to a red card that put the Owls down to 10 men for the rest of the game. The Mounties put on loads of pressure with this advantage, but could not find the go-ahead goal.

Pavon nearly gave the Mounties the lead with a beautiful bicycle kick, but it was stopped by Jillson. Moments later, sophomore Felipe Madero had a header that looked destined for the goal, but it was cleared off the goal line just before crossing.

In the final seconds of regulation, Javier Moran got a free kick from just outside the box, connecting with a nearly perfect shot that hit the post and deflected out as time expired. Moran later shot first for the Mounties in the shootout, scoring the first goal.

The odds of coming back down two goals in a shootout are very low. But with the clutch play of Rose and the calmness of the EOU shooters, the Mountaineers persevered.

Pavon and Moran led the team with five shots each while Madero had four.

The Mountaineers will continue play quickly, facing No. 3-seed Southern Oregon in the semifinals on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
