Mountaineers Earn Nationals Berth, Fall to SOU in CCC Finals

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Mountaineers' season will continue.

After dropping the first game of the double-elimination Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships, the Eastern Oregon softball team rolled of three-straight one-run wins in elimination games to advance to tournament finals and earn the conference's second automatic berth to nationals. EOU's wins included 1-0 over No. 20 Oregon Tech, 3-2 over British Columbia before capping off with a 2-1 victory over No. 12 Corban on Sunday.

The Blue and Gold's tournament run ended in the finals against regular season champion and host No. 8 Southern Oregon in a 7-5 defeat. Due to the Raiders already owning the CCC's first automatic qualifier, the second went to the tournament runner-up in EOU.

EOU will find out where they will next play on the NAIA Selection Show, which will be hosted on Tuesday, May 8 at 2 p.m. EOU Athletics will host a watch party in the booster room of Quinn Coliseum. The Opening Round of the NAIA Championships begin May 14 at host sites.

GAME 1: Eastern Oregon 2, No. 12 Corban 1

The Mountaineers (26-22) came back against CCC Pitcher of the Year Sabrina Boyd after falling behind 1-0 in the fourth inning. Corban scored the first run on an RBI triple by Sam Woodley in the top half of the inning, but EOU quickly responded.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Mounties put three-straight runners on with one out. Senior outfielder Maryssa Santi reached on an infield single, followed by walks from junior outfielder Rayne Spencer and senior third baseman Chelsea Spanier to load the bases. Up stepped Second Team All-CCC first baseman Shevan DeFreitas who hit a hard grounder up the middle to drive in two runs and put EOU up 2-1.

From there it was all senior pitcher Hailey Kline, who was dominant during the entire tournament. Kline (16-8) set down the final nine batters she faced to earn her third win of the tourney. The senior pitched another complete game, allowing just the one run over seven innings with seven strikeouts.

The win sent the Mounties to the CCC finals against SOU and earned them a trip the NAIA Championships for the first time since 2016 and just the second time since 2006.

GAME 2: No. 8 Southern Oregon 7, Eastern Oregon 5

The Blue and Gold next set their sights on the tournament title knowing their season would continue regardless. However, the No. 8 Raiders took the crown on their home field with a 7-5 victory.

A five-run first inning for SOU proved to be the difference as the Mountaineers rally came up just short.

The Mounties scored their first runs in the top of the third inning as Spanier singled to score senior shortstop Lena Richards and Santi. SOU answered back quickly, however, with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third.

EOU would not go away easily though as Defreitas continued her hot hitting with a three-run home run, her 10th of the season. The Mountaineers threatened in the seventh inning with two walks, but were unable to score the tying runs.

Entering in the first inning out of the bullpen, junior pitcher Lauren Spencer helped keep the Mounties in the game by allowing just two runs over 5.2 innings.

EOU and SOU will each continue into the NAIA Championships with the CCC automatic berths. No. 12 Corban and No. 20 Oregon Tech will await their fates on the NAIA Selection Show on Tuesday.
