Softball Completes 4-Game Sweep of College of Idaho

LA GRANDE, Ore. - The Eastern Oregon softball team extended its winning streak to 10 games after sweeping rival College of Idaho. In Sunday's doubleheader, the Mounties managed to defeat their opponents in both games by scores of 2-1 and 7-6.
 
GAME 1 | Eastern Oregon 2 - College of Idaho 1
 
It is was a low-scoring first game on Sunday at Peggy Anderson Field in La Grande, Oregon, as neither team could score in the first four innings. The Mountaineers were the first ones to get on the board, as senior shortstop Lena Richards scored on an RBI groundout by senior third baseman Chelsea Spanierwith the bases loaded.
 
Senior second baseman/outfielder Maryssa Santi scored the second run for the Mounties after junior first baseman Shevan DeFrietas singled to give EOU a 2-0 lead. The Yotes scored in the seventh inning with Eakle, but the Mounties managed to keep the lead to secure the 2-1 victory.
 
Senior pitcher Hailey Kline earned her eighth victory of the season with another outstanding start. A day after shutting out the Yotes, Kline continued her dominance by pitching another complete game. The senior allowed just one run over seven innings, striking out eight batters.
 
GAME 2 | Eastern Oregon 7 - College of Idaho 6
 
The Mountaineers started slow in the second and final game of the day, as the Yotes grabbed a 4-1 lead in the first inning and extended it to 6-1 in the top of the fifth.
 
However, for the second-straight day the Mounties did not give up, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Junior catcher Brandi Bowling, Santi, Spanier, sophomore designated player Tayler Finch and Defreitas scored for the Blue and Gold in the inning to tie the score 6-6.
 
Finally in the bottom of the seventh, the Mounties capped off the weekend with a walk-off victory as Bowling singled junior center field Bobbi Bertsch home.
 
Spanier and junior second baseman Madison Barr led the offense with two RBI each. Spanier, Santi, Bertsch and Bowling each tallied two hits in the game.
 
Junior pitcher Lauren Spencer was the victor for EOU out of the bullpen. Spencer tossed the final four innings while allowing just two runs with two strikeouts.
 
With this victory, the Mountaineers extended their winning streak to 10. They will be facing Carroll College on March 29 and 30 in La Grande, Oregon. Each days' games will begin at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
