Mountaineer Bats Awaken in Doubleheader Sweep of NCU

PENDLETON, Ore. – The bats awoke on Saturday afternoon in Pendleton as the Eastern Oregon softball team took the first two games 10-2 and 11-9 of a four-game series against Northwest Christian in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

GAME 1 | Eastern Oregon 10, Northwest Christian 2
The Mountaineers (6-8, 3-2 CCC) rolled offensively in game one, run-ruling the visiting Beacons after five innings, thanks to a three-run fifth to end the game. EOU scored three in the first and third innings and one in the fourth before run-ruling Northwest Christian.

After an NCU run in the top of the first on a solo home run, the Mountaineers answered with a two-run home run by junior outfielder Rayne Spencer and an RBI single by junior outfielder Bobbi Bertsch.

Junior first baseman Shevan DeFreitas crushed a three-run home run in the third inning to put the Mountaineers on top 6-2. Senior second baseman/outfielder Maryssa Santi hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth followed by RBI singles by senior shortstop Lena Richards and senior third baseman Chelsea Spanier walked the Mounties off with a 10-2 victory.

Senior pitcher Hailey Kline (4-2) pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run over five innings with four strikeouts. Spanier led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Richards was 2-for-4 also with two runs scored.

GAME 2 | Eastern Oregon 11, Northwest Christian 9
The Mounties opened the game with a three-run first inning thanks to an RBI single by Spencer and a two-run home run by Spanier. NCU answered with two runs in the second inning, which was quickly answered back by the Mounties with a huge six-run bottom of the second to take a commanding 9-2 lead.

In the second inning, junior second baseman Madison Barr scored on a wild pitch to start the rally, followed by an RBI double by Santi. Spencer added an RBI single, Defreitas drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, finally capped off by a two-run home run by Bertsch.

The Beacons did not go down easily, however, scoring seven runs in the top of the third to tie the game up at nine runs apiece. The next three innings were dominated by good pitching, as the teams remained tied 9-9. In the bottom of the sixth, it was Spanier once again who came up with the big hit, driving in the eventual winning runs to put EOU ahead for good 11-9.

Sophomore pitcher Ashton Kazmierski earned the win (2-4) in relief after pitching a brilliant 4.2 innings of shutout ball. Kazmierski allowed just three hits and no runs with two strikeouts to keep the Beacons in check after the third inning.

Spanier had another big game, finishing 3-for-4 with four RBI. Spencer went 3-for-4 as well with three runs scored and two RBI while Santi also scored three runs.

The Blue and Gold, having already clinched the series victory for CCC-counting games, will battle the Beacons once again on Sunday in a doubleheader, with game one beginning at 11 a.m. The games will be played on the campus of Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Oregon.
