Men’s Wrestling Tops Umpqua, Falls to SOU

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon men's wrestling team defeated Umpqua Community College 38-18, but fell in a close dual 25-17 against Southern Oregon on Friday night at Quinn Coliseum.

UMPQUA DUAL
The Mountaineers won seven of nine matches to cruise to a 38-18 victory over Umpqua CC. Senior Mhar Caballa opening the evening with a pin in nearly a minute over the Riverhawks' Victor Perez to earn EOU six points.

Redshirt freshman Ryan Ninman followed up with a 21-6 technical fall victory over UCC's Nathan Kiddoo. Junior Tyler Miler put the Mounties up 17-0 early with another quick pin in 1:21 over Johnny Maldonado.

After a loss at 149 pounds, the Mountaineers won the next four matches to go up 38-6 with just two matches remaining. Freshman Keegan Mulhill, junior John Leal and senior Drake Randall all won by fall while sophomore Marco Retano won a thrilling overtime match, earning a sudden-victory with a takedown in the overtime period.

SOU DUAL
Caballa picked up where he left off, defeating SOU's Christian Rendon by another pin with just four seconds left in the first period in the third annual battle for the Wagon Wheel.

After a decision loss, Miler answered with an extremely close 7-6 decision victory over Justin Acuff, gaining the final point on a penalty by Acuff.

The Mounties dropped the next two matches to fall behind 12-9. However, Leal won his second match of the evening by an 8-5 decision to tie the score. Randall followed with his second pin over Elijah Epling in the second period.

The Blue and Gold fell in the final three matches, however, with one by a major decision, a forfeit and a fall.

SOU lost three points due to unsportsmanlike conduct while EOU lost one to end the final score 25-17 in favor of the Raiders.
