MESA, Ariz. - The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team fell to Benedictine Mesa 92-79 Friday night in a non-conference road matchup in Arizona.
The Mountaineers (2-5) have lost five-straight games on the road after starting the season with back-to-back home victories.
Benedictine Mesa (6-1) rode a hot first half to victory after scoring 52 points in the first 20 minutes, leading by as many as 19. The Mounties led just once in what was otherwise a wire-to-wire victory for the Redhawks.
Eastern Oregon shot 41.2 percent (28-for-68) from the field, including 31.4 percent (11-for-35) from three-point range. The Mounties were led by sophomore guard Jordan May, who recorded 33 points on 11-for-25 shooting, draining five triples in the process. Junior Jarek Schetzle and sophomore Peter Hamilton were the only other Mounties in double-digits, each of them finishing with 12 points.
The biggest struggle for the Mountaineers came on the glass. The Redhawks out-rebounded EOU 46-24 in the game, leading to 11 second chance points for Benedictine Mesa. The large disparity in defensive rebounds can in part be attributed to the large difference in free-throwd between the two programs.Â
Alongside rebounding woes, fouls were troublesome for EOU. They committed 30 fouls in the game, sending the Redhawks to the free-throw line a whopping 39 times. Benedictine Mesa took full advantage of those opportunities, shooting 34-for-39 (87.2%).
The Blue and Gold are back in action tomorrow against Arizona Christian in Phoenix at 3 p.m. MT. After Saturday's contest, the Mounties will be off until November 23 for the College of Idaho Tournament in Caldwell.
