EOU Football Finishes Season With 8-7 Win Over Carroll

HELENA, Mont. - The Eastern Oregon football team defeated Carroll College 8-7 Saturday afternoon in Frontier Conference action.

The (RV) Mountaineers (6-4) end the season on a high-note, winning the game on a blocked field goal in the final seconds. With an 8-7 lead, Carroll College (5-6) had an 18-yard field goal attempt to put them ahead with 15 seconds left. The make would have put the Fighting Saints up 10-8 with little time left, but sophomore linebacker Chase Van Wyck and others burst through the line to secure the victory for the Mountaineers.

Special teams units were heavily featured on each side today, with both teams combining for 20 punts in the contest. The Mountaineers undoubtedly won the special teams battle, blocking a punt and a field goal, as well as Nate Harden connecting with two field goals, one of them being a 49-yard shot to put the Mounties up 8-7 in the fourth quarter. The punt block came as a crucial play in the game as well, and is attributed to defensive back Justin Hughes who flew off the line to get to the punter. The ball trickled out the back of the end zone for a safety, giving the Mounties a 5-0 lead at the time. Hughes also made another key play, picking off the Carroll quarterback in the end zone in the third quarter.

Carroll's only points came at the very end of the first half. After a huge sack on third down by Van Wyck, the Fighting Saints were forced into a fourth-and-goal situation from the 19-yard line with five seconds left in the period. Carroll's quarterback rolled out to the right, and found a receiver just beyond the pylon for a touchdown as time expired.

Eastern Oregon's stout run defense was on full display in the contest, led by the defensive line. Carroll mustered up 98 yards on 44 carries in the game, averaging out to 2.2 yards per carry. Eastern Oregon had their way with the Fighting Saints offensive line in this one, bringing down the quarterback seven times for 51 yards. Sage Delong was an imposing force for EOU, leading the team with 12 tackles, three tackles for loss, and three sacks. Hughes and Van Wyck also recorded 10 tackles of their own. Following Delong's lead, Isaiah Cranford tallied 1.5 sacks, Van Wyck had one, and senior Nick De Alba got one with three tackles for loss.

The Blue and Gold were out of sorts offensively for the majority of the game. The game conditions were poor with snow and wind, making it difficult to get into rhythm. Quarterback Kai Quinn completed 15 of 37 passes for 185 yards in the game, with his leading receiver being tight end Gabe Giacci who caught two balls for 60 yards.

Although they were out-gained 407-245, only had the ball for 20:41, and managed just one of thirteen third-down conversions, the Mountaineers won the turnover battle and made game-changing plays on special teams to fuel this road victory.

The 2018 season for the Mountaineers was filled with highs and lows, but they were still able to improve on their 2017 campaign that saw them finish 4-6. They will be returning a lot of key players going into 2019, and will look to build on their successes this season.
