Mountaineers Fall in Opener at No. 3 MSU-Northern

HAVRE, Mont. – The Eastern Oregon men's wrestling team opened the season with a tough match, falling to No. 3 Montana State-Northern 32-9 on Friday night in a Cascade Collegiate Conference dual.
 
The Mountaineers got three wins on the night, but lost the last two matches by forfeit (one due to injury), along with one by pin, one by technical fall and three by decisions.
 
Senior Mhar Caballa opened the evening with a 14-7 decision victory over MSUN's Nick Kunz to put the Mountaineers up 3-0.
 
The Lights followed up with five-straight victories with a technical fall in the 133-pound match and a pin in the 157-pound matchup.
 
Senior Drake Randall ended the losing streak at 174 pounds, defeating Chase Short by a 3-2 decision to cut the deficit to 20-6 through seven wrestlers. Sophomore Marco Retano had a great start to his season, picking up a 5-4 decision win over Steeler French at 184 pounds to end the Mounties' scoring on the evening.
 
The Lights picked up six points at 197 pounds as Dino May was forced to exit with an injury for a forfeit. MSUN picked up the final six points in the heavyweight match to take the opener 32-9 over EOU.
 
The Mounties have a quick turnaround on Saturday, visiting No. 4 Providence for another difficult dual. First match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Mountain time, 6 p.m. Pacific.
