EOU Men’s Soccer Opens Home Slate With 1-1 Draw Against Northwest

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Opening on its home field for the first time in 2017, the EOU men's soccer team started fast with a strike in the fifth minute but visiting Northwest converted early in the second half to tie the affair as both teams played to a scoreless match Friday afternoon at the EOU Soccer Field.

"Our guys played great the first 20 minutes of the game but we have to get better at staying focused for a complete 90-minute match," said head coach Kenny Huber. "Every day we are progressing but I believe our guys will come ready to play against Evergreen tomorrow afternoon."

Senior forward Julian Wells opened the scoring for EOU in the fifth minute, taking advantage of an Eagles' offside call shortly before the play for the dribble and score. It was Well's second goal of the season. Junior transfer Josh Goodman nearly made it a 2-0 game in the 29th minute but his shot was denied by the Eagles' keeper.

In the closing minutes of the first half, NU launched a flurry of shots at junior keeper Aidan Wright but the junior was spot on with the glove work to head into the half with the 1-0 advantage.

NU quickly knotted up the score in the beginning stages of the second half. Following an Eastern foul, NU's Obi Osonu settled a volley and struck a left-footed shot to the outside inner post for the score.

In the 57th minute, a scuffle broke out after an EOU foul which sent junior defender Ethan Ronquillo and Eagles' Chris Iacolucci off the pitch with red cards. Lucas Alves Ribeiro, who was on the bench at the time, was also given a red card. The remainder of the way, both teams played with 10 men on each side.

Looking to put the Mounties up ahead late in regulation, senior midfielder Carlos Peregrina nearly did just that at the 77th mark. Peregrina fired a shot from 25-yards but NU's keeper Daniel Christenson got one hand on it to keep it from going in.

In the second overtime off a corner from Goodman, a wave of shots from EOU were blocked which ended in one last bicycle kick attempt from sophomore forward Alex Gutierrez.

EOU capped off the game edging Northwest 21-17 in shots, six coming on target.

Wright finished the match playing all 110 minutes, recording five saves.

BY THE NUMBERS
6 – Shots on frame by the Mounties.
5 – Saves on the night for Wright.
2ND – Goal of the year for Wells.
