Burchak Homers Twice, EOU Softball Sweeps Northwest Nazarene

NAMPA, Idaho – Junior designated player Lauren Burchak blasted two homers, including a grand slam in game one, and the EOU softball team swept Northwest Nazarene on Friday afternoon at Halle Field.

After a seventh-inning rally propelled the Blue and Gold to an 8-5 victory in game one, EOU exploded for a five-inning, 11-0 rout in game two to seal the sweep.

GAME ONE – EOU 8, NNU 5
In game one, EOU erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh, and the Mountaineers held off a late Crusader rally to take the affair, 8-5.

Junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier was outstanding, batting 3-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of doubles. The Gerlach twins posted two hits apiece, and Burchak went 2-for-3 with a five RBI thanks to a game-changing grand slam in the seventh.

In the circle, senior Haylie Van Laethem amassed three strikeouts and forced 13 groundouts.

After Van Laethem yielded only two hits in the middle innings, EOU entered the top of the seventh with the game knotted at three apiece. Junior shortstop Lena Richards and senior left fielder Taylor Gerlach belted one-out singles, and then Spanier delivered the go-ahead RBI double to make it a 4-3 contest.

With the bases loaded and only one out, Burchak smashed her third-career grand slam to center field, and EOU increased the margin to five (8-3).

In the bottom half of the inning, Van Laethem gave up two runs before forcing a pop out for the final out of the game.

GAME TWO – EOU 11, NNU 0 (FIVE INN.)
The Blue and Gold's hot bats carried over to game two, and junior pitcher Hailey Kline tossed a one-hitter to lead the Mountaineers to an 11-0 triumph.

Kline faced only 16 batters in the circle, compiling three Ks en route to earning her first win of the 2017 campaign.

Burchak launched another homer, this time a three-run bomb, and EOU went 11-for-28 at the plate. Senior first baseman Cheyenne Barker, Spanier, Burchak, and senior catcher Alex Shuster each tallied two hits apiece.

With a four-run advantage in the fifth thanks to Burchak's early homer and RBI single, EOU tacked on six more runs to put the Crusaders (6-9) away. Barker smacked a one-out double to put two runners in scoring position for EOU, and then senior right fielder Jorden Gerlach hit an RBI single to make it a 5-0 game.

Senior second baseman Maryssa Santi was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced to extend the margin to six (6-0), and Shuster followed with a two-run single to left field to extend the lead to eight.

Santi scooted home on a passed ball, and junior center fielder Kaitlyn Reynolds followed with an RBI single to swell the advantage to double digits.

After recording only five hits in its first three games, EOU exploded for 23 in the two wins over Northwest Nazarene.
