Kelly’s Touchdown Lifts EOU Football Past (RV) Rocky Mountain, 21-17

BILLINGS, Mont. – Junior wide out Brenden Kelly caught a 17-yard touchdown pass with 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter which helped EOU – who was trailing 17-14 – snap its three-game losing streak Saturday afternoon at Herb Klindt Field.

The Mountaineers (3-6) mustered a total of 357 yards of offense, 154 of them coming on the ground and 203 through the air. Time of possession was nearly even for both team at 30 minutes, while the Mounties were edged in first downs 20-17.

It was a rough start for EOU as the squad went three and out on its first two possessions of the ball game. After the Mountaineers' defense returned the favor holding RMC (5-4) to three plays, they started their next drive on their own 40.

On the ensuing possession, sophomore running back Victor Dias took it to the house on a 60-yard carry, shedding tacklers left and right down the sideline for the Blue and Golds' first score (6:05).

It was all defense over the next two minutes in which RMC received the upper hand.  Senior corner Jorden Payne picked off Drew Korf for his first interception of the year to give the Mounties the ball back at their own 12-yard line. After a sack and now facing a 3rd and 16, freshman quarterback Saige Wilkerson was picked off and it was taken to the house for the pick-six.

EOU received the ball one more before the end of the first and manufactured a seven play drive for 53 yards that ended in with a 16-yard touchdown reception for senior receiver Calvin Connors (0:35).

The Battlin' Bears lived up to their name and carried over a 15 play, 81-yard drive that erased nearly seven minutes off the board. Korf connected with Lucas Overton for a five-yard td pass to knot the affair at 14. RMC's defense forced a punt to get the ball back and marched down the field on a 10 play drive, getting only a field goal to head into the locker room up 17-14.

Both teams commenced the third quarter going three and out and followed up with turnovers as each defense came up with an interception. EOU started the third quarter on its own 30 going on a nine play drive for what would be the eventual game-winning drive.

The drive was highlighted by sophomore quarterback Kai Quinn going 5-for-5 on passes, a 29-yard reception from Connors and threaded the needle between two defensive backs as Kelly snagged the 17-yard throw on the sideline of the end zone.

Rocky's last chance at a rally came with 2:50 on the clock in the fourth quarter. On the last possession of a 16 play drive, senior defensive back Riley Neville picked off Korf at the six-yard line and took it back to the RMC 47 to seal the triumph.

Quinn finished 16-for-28 for 203 yards and 31 yards on nine carries. Connors led EOU in receiving with seven catches good for 91 yards and one touchdown.

Dias carred the ball 17 times for 104 yards, his longest being the 60-yard score.

Freshman linebacker Chase Van Wyck collected nine tackles, including one sack for a loss of three yards.
