Total-Team Effort Helps EOU Softball Sweep Walla Walla

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon University softball team recorded 35 hits in two games combined en route to overpowering Walla Walla on Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers swept their opponent for the second time this season.

GAME ONE
EOU 17, WWU 0 (FIVE INNINGS)
EOU tied a school record with 17 RBI and saw multi-hit performances from three players in a 17-run game one victory.

Junior first baseman Cheyenne Barker batted 2-for-3 with four RBI, including a two-run homer to put EOU on the board. Both sophomore center fielder Kaitlyn Reynolds and junior right fielder Taylor Gerlach notched two hits, while freshman second baseman Courtney Chase tallied three RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Hailey Kline (5-4) mustered four strikeouts in three innings, while sophomore pitcher Ashley Driscoll tossed two innings and collected one strikeout.

Barker launched a two-run homer to put EOU on the board in the first inning, and she came back in the second frame with a two-RBI single to extend the advantage to four (4-0).

The Mountaineers continued to roll and tacked on three more runs in the third, including a two-run triple by senior shortstop Haley Hess.

Leading 12-0 in the fourth, both sophomore third baseman CeCe Pratt and freshman designated player Mykal Weissenfluh posted RBI doubles, and EOU ultimately raced to a 17-0 triumph.

GAME TWO
EOU 12, WWU 3 (SIX INNINGS)
While game two was a little more interesting, the Mountaineers still managed to take care of the Wolves in six innings, 12-3. EOU outhit Walla Walla, 18-4, and claimed a 7-0 lead in the first frame to break the game open.

Hess went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and notched three RBI, while junior first baseman Taylor Smith registered her first-career homer and posted three hits and three RBI in her fourth game of the season.

In the circle, junior pitcher Alexis Spence (2-2) collected her second victory of the season and tossed five strikeouts.

EOU (11-13, 4-2 CCC) racked up seven runs on eight hits in the first inning to pull away early. Senior center fielder Shelby Baertsch doubled to plate Hess, and then Barker followed with a two-run double to make it a 3-0 game. After the Mountaineers' advantage swelled to five (5-0), Hess closed the stanza with a two-run single.

Leading 9-3 in the sixth, Smith smashed a two-run homer and the first of her career to push EOU up by eight, and the Mountaineers went on to capture a 12-3 victory to complete the sweep over the Wolves.
