EOU Softball Sweeps Carroll, Moves to 3-1 in CCC Play

CALDWELL, Idaho – Behind a walk-off homer by sophomore second baseman Maryssa Santi in game one and a three-hitter by sophomore pitcher Hailey Kline in game two, the Eastern Oregon University softball team completed a thrilling sweep over Carroll College on Saturday afternoon at Symms Field.

EOU (8-12, 3-1 CCC) won its third-straight game, and the Mountaineers notched their best start in league action in nearly a decade.

GAME ONE
EOU 7, Carroll 5
Santi played the hero in game one, as the Idaho native booked the walk-off two-run homer to seal the 7-5 triumph for EOU.

Santi tallied two hits on the day, while junior right fielder Cheyenne Barker batted 2-for-4, including a solo bomb in the third inning. Meanwhile, junior third baseman Jorden Gerlach registered a solo homer in the fourth inning.

Junior righty Haylie Van Laethem recorded her fourth victory of the season, posting one strikeout and forcing eight fly outs and nine groundouts.

The two CCC foes traded leads a few times in the early going. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, EOU got on the board and snatched a 2-1 advantage after back-to-back RBI singles by Barker and senior first baseman Marisa Gonzalez.

The Saints managed to reclaim a one-run (3-2) lead, but Barker said enough of that, as she sent a ball out of the park in the third frame to tie the game.

After Van Laethem compelled Carroll to just one hit in the top of the fourth, Gerlach closed the stanza with a solo smash to center to put the lead (4-3) back into the hands of the Mountaineers.

An RBI single by junior catcher Alex Shuster added an insurance run for EOU in the fifth, but Carroll responded with two runs and two hits in the top of the seventh to knot the game at five apiece and keep the pressure on EOU.

With two outs and one runner on in the bottom of the seventh, Santi belted a line-drive homer to win the game for the Mountaineers in walk-off fashion, sending the EOU dugout into elation.

GAME TWO
EOU 2, Carroll 0
Game two saw a complete game shutout by Kline, as she surrendered only three hits on the day and posted three strikeouts.

EOU mustered only five hits of its own, but Barker and Gerlach logged the hits that mattered most. While Gerlach hit an RBI single in the second, Barker capped the Mountaineers' tally with a solo homer in the fifth inning to make it a two-run game.

After Santi led off with a hit-by-pitch in the second, senior center fielder Shelby Baertsch tapped a sacrifice bunt to send Santi to second. Shuster followed with a single, and then Gerlach delivered an RBI single to left fielder to put EOU on the board.

Kline kept Carroll hitless in the first four stanzas, and Barker smashed a solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to give the Mountaineers a smidgen of breathing room.

Although the Saints (10-10, 1-3 CCC) opened the seventh with a double, Kline forced three-straight outs to complete the shutout victory for EOU.

GAME BALL GOES TO…
Santi and Kline – While Santi's walk-off homer propelled the Mountaineers to victory in game one, it was Kline's pitching in game two that set the tone and led to the shutout.
