Mountaineer Softball Rallies in Game One to Notch Split with NNU

NAMPA, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon University softball team rallied from a 6-0 deficit in game one before dropping the second contest against Northwest Nazarene, resulting in another split with the Crusaders on Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE
EOU 7, NNU 6
The Mountaineers (3-9) tacked on seven runs in the final two innings to rally and defeat the Crusaders (6-7) in thrilling fashion, 7-6.

EOU outhit NNU, 15-6, and junior designated player Lauren Burchak served as the hero after belting a three-run homer in the seventh inning to give the Mountaineers the lead.

Senior center fielder Shelby Baertsch batted 3-for-4, while junior right fielder Cheyenne Barker recorded a hit and two RBI. EOU saw two hits apiece from senior shortstop Haley Hess, junior left fielder Taylor Turner, senior first baseman Marisa Gonzalez, sophomore second baseman Maryssa Santi, and junior third baseman Jorden Gerlach.

Junior pitcher Alexis Spence collected her first victory of the season, recording three strikeouts in 3.1 innings of action.

Trailing 6-0 in the sixth frame, both Baertsch and Santi mustered two-out singles, and then Gerlach followed with a single to right field to plate a pair of runs and cut the deficit to four (6-2).

After EOU forced three-up, three-down in the bottom half of the sixth, the Mountaineers exploded for five runs in the seventh to take the lead. Both Hess and Turner opened the stanza with singles, and then Barker launched a two-run single to make it a two-run (6-4) game with no outs.

A Gonzalez double put two runners in scoring position, and that's when Burchak smashed her three-run homer to center field to lift EOU on top, 7-6.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Spence posted a strikeout, groundout, and fly out to end the contest, and the Mountaineers sealed the come-from-behind victory.

GAME TWO
NNU 6, EOU 0
EOU left nine runners stranded and surrendered six runs in the middle innings en route to suffering a 6-0 setback in game two.

Barker hit 2-for-3 to lead the Mountaineers, while Turner, Gonzalez, Burchak, Baertsch, and Santi tallied one hit apiece.

Three pitchers saw action in the circle for EOU, as sophomore righty Ashley Driscoll paced EOU with three strikeouts and no runs in the final two innings.

Hungry to get on the board, EOU put two runners on with no outs in the fourth inning, but NNU's Kendall Goodwin threw two strikeouts and forced a fly out to keep the Mountaineers silent.

The Crusaders' infielders notched double plays in the fifth and sixth innings to maintain EOU and earn the shutout victory.
