EOU Men’s Hoops Takes Regular-Season Finale at Walla Walla, 72-55

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon University men's basketball team racked up 20 points in transition and shot over 52 percent in the second half, as the Mountaineers picked up a 72-55 win over Walla Walla on Thursday night in their final contest of the regular season.

EOU (15-15, 10-10 CCC) held Walla Walla to a 32.8 percent (20-for-61) clip and recorded 19 assists en route to the victory.


KEY PERFORMANCES
Junior wing Travis Meeker led four players in double figures with 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting, while both sophomore guard Tate de Laveaga and freshman sharpshooter Caulin Bakalarski added 15 points apiece. Senior guard Case Rada netted 10 points, and junior guard Kentrell Washington hauled in a team-high 10 boards.

Ryan Spady paced Walla Walla (4-23, 2-17 CCC) with 16 points and 13 rebounds.


THE STORYLINE
After Walla Walla snatched a 27-25 advantage with 2:56 left in the first half, de Laveaga drained a three and followed with a layup to kickstart a 9-0 EOU run to end the frame. With 1:22 on the clock, sophomore wing Austin Strock scored in the lane to cap the run and give the Mountaineers a 34-27 advantage at the break.

Bakalarski tossed in six points amidst a 10-3 burst to extend EOU's lead to 13 (53-40) with 9:18 left to play, but the Wolves scored 12 of the next 15 points to slice the advantage to four (56-52).

With 2:48 remaining, de Laveaga knocked down a critical triple, and then Strock connected on a pair at the charity stripe to put EOU up by nine (61-52).

EOU held Walla Walla without a field goal in the final four minutes, and the Mountaineers ultimately came away with a 17-point triumph.


STATS OF THE GAME
2 – EOU held Walla Walla to only two field goals in the final seven minutes, a stretch in which the Mountaineers extended their lead to double figures.
23 – The Navy and Gold took advantage of 19 Walla Walla miscues, as the team posted 23 points off turnovers.

EOU will compete in the quarterfinals of the CCC Tournament on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The opponent and location are to be determined.
