ROCKLIN, Calif. – The EOU men's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season and came out on top against Menlo, 74-61, in the 10th annual Bill Holtz Warrior Classic.
Offensively for EOU (2-1) freshman guard
Max McCullough led the way with 17 points while draining five of six shots from beyond the arc. Senior forward
Bryan McGriff and senior guard
Kentrell Washington each tallied 12 points apiece. Washington also brought down six boards along with four assists.
It was a back-and-forth first half for both teams, before Menlo (0-1) led by as much as nine (35-26) with 1:47 remaining in the first stanza. Consecutive free throws by McGriff and a Washington jumper, cut the deficit to five before heading into the locker room.
Starting the second half, junior guard
Austin Winegar buried a three-pointer on the first possession and a layup from McCullough tied the affair at 35. A free throw at the 12:00 minute mark from junior guard
Matt Wong put the Mountaineers up by one (44-43), and EOU did look back.
A Winegar layup sparked an 8-0 run but Menlo's Graham responded with a three. Menlo got as close as one, that's when McCullough hit back-to-back threes, giving the Blue and Gold a 56-49 lead with 6:58 remaining and ultimately closing the door on Menlo.
